Payouts

After a hiatus of a few years, I resumed selling occasionally at eBay about a year ago using an account that’s only slightly older (I’d sold for many years with two other accounts).  One of the practices of eBay that I find irksome is the borrowing of funds from one transaction to cover the shipping costs of another, making a strict accounting less straightforward than it ought to be.  About a month ago I made a sale where the funds payable to me - $1,725.32 – were put on hold for thirty days.  I accept that, as a low-volume seller with a fairly new account, such delayed payment may be prudent, but now that the payout is about to be made, I’ve noticed the amount has been reduced to $1,692.94.  If funds from a sale are put on hold, it seems to me they should be inaccessible to eBay as well as to me.  I didn’t record the prior accounting and so cannot determine how and why the payout has been reduced.  Has anyone else experienced this ‘sleight-of-hand’?

Re: Payouts

Nothing nefarious or "slight-of-hand" going on.  When you purchase shipping labels, it's your choice whether you use pending funds for them or not.  It's easy to track your sales and the associated costs.

Most sellers would strongly disagree that they shouldn't be able to use pending funds for shipping labels.  That would cause a huge uproar if they changed that.

Re: Payouts

It sounds like you have it set up so that any shipping labels you purchase are paid for by 'available funds'. You can change your settings to have the labels paid for by a different source. I personally use a credit card so that I can receive the points my credit card company gives me.

Re: Payouts

That could also make for better accounting of your shipping costs, However I would not want to pay interest on shipping labels.

Re: Payouts

You have the details available to you ANY time you want to look.  In your Selling Hub under the Payment tab, the Summary pages shows you the status of your funds, on the right is your recent transactions in your payment account.  Further down the page are other details about your account.  In the left rail you have access to reports and other functions.

@meme6253

I use a card for business expenses that I pay off in full every month, so I don't pay interest on that. And as you mentioned, it makes accounting easier because all of my expenses are in one place.

However, I understand that not everyone has that option, so the option to pay from existing funds is better for some people.

That is a very good plan.  Of course you have to use PayPal to set up a Credit Card to pay your shipping costs on Ebay.  We have no way to have a Credit Card pay for selling fees or store fees.

I do my shipping that way.  The Credit Card I have set up on PayPal allows me to earn Cash Back Bonuses.  I let them accrue all year long so it is a nice number by the end of the year.  I use it as part of my Christmas fund.

Re: Payouts

Hi @caminocielo

If money is being removed from your pending funds to pay for shipping labels … it is because you  set it up to do that at some point.

The next time you purchase a shipping label … scroll all the way down to the bottom of the screen. You will see the options to pay either with PayPal OR with your pending funds.

Once you choose a payment option, future label purchases will be paid using the same funding option until/unless you change it yourself.

BTW, the funds for all items that sell for $1000 (or more) currently are being held for 30 days.

Re: Payouts

Yes, of course, when I purchase a shipping label I can choose to pay for it with funds from the sale I’ve made or with PayPal, but if I’ve made other sales in the same time frame, funds are routinely deducted not from proceeds of the sale for which I need the label but from other, unrelated sales.  That’s my concern.  I’ve no issue with using funds from payments that are pending (except for those that are subject to an eBay-imposed extended hold, which I think should be exempt from ‘adjustments’ by eBay).

“BTW, the funds for all items that sell for $1000 (or more) currently are being held for 30 days.”  This isn’t correct.  I just made a $1,500.00 sale, for example, and received payment in a few days.
