Payment Received on PayPal, Item Not Sold on EBay

Today I received a notification on PayPal that a user bought my item (with purchase details) and I received the funds through PayPal. However, I am confused as the item was a “buy it now” and it has not sold on the eBay platform yet, and my eBay money balance was not effected. Is this a popular scam? I don’t want to ship out my item until eBay notifies me that it’s sold and off the market. Any suggestions?

What do you mean by "eBay money balance"? Do you mean that you have not been billed for final value fees on your eBay invoice?

When you view the PayPal transaction on the PayPal site, does the 'Purchase Details'  link take you to the eBay transaction? If so, I do not think it is a scam - I don't see how a buyer could send money and then trick PayPal into linking it to an eBay transaction. I would lean toward a bug or delay on the eBay side.

Have you actually, physically logged into your Paypal account to see if you have a payment there?

Login to your paypal account...DO NOT click any links in the email...type "paypal.com" into the browser.

If the money is there, then you have a legitimate payment and ebay is just have notification "issues" and the sold notice will come at a later time.

Yes, it can be a scam...you get a "weird" paypal email and you click a link in that email to login to your paypal account...the site looks like paypal, but it's a fake site set up to collect your login information.

1) normally I receive money through eBay first, so in the sold section I have a balance of money for my items sold. But my item is still “active” and haven’t received payment/notification from eBay “your item was sold” like I normally do.

2) there is no link back to eBay, but the buyer has his/her eBay shipping info attached in the PayPal notification. I’m thinking that since there is no invoice it could be easily canceled as I have no idea what the eBay username is.

So this was an email, correct?  If you received an email claiming to be from Paypal, it's likely fake.   

Login to your paypal account directly, do not click on any link in that "notification" email, and look for the transaction.  Do you find it in your paypal transaction history?

If you have already clicked on a link in the "notification" email to login to paypal you need to change your paypal password immediately.  If you use that same password for other sites, go change those passwords as well.

Really sounds like a phishing email.
