Part time/small sellers

We had a very pleasant chat yesterday with eBay executive Sarah Brubacher. Very nice person BTW. She has assured us that ebay values & wants to keep small/part time sellers around. I’ve always believed that long time sellers of any volume are the backbone of eBay & according to what Sarah said EBay recognizes that.

This post is for informational purposes. Some will believe it & some won’t.

Have a great day my friends! 😀

@sarahbru: Would you please read through the contents of this thread here, and see if you could offer some more substantive replies to questions that never got addressed on Tuesday? In particular, there was a posting from tenbigdogs (here) that went completely unacknowledged, with later replies focusing instead on a discussion about shoes, and people posting photos of each other.  That's not really what we were expecting in a purported "eBay Executive Chat."

In short, we could all benefit from actual dialogue with you. It doesn't have to be 24/7; obviously we all have other things to do as well. But as an example of how not to interact with your customers, look at Bob Kupbens: he (or someone writing for him) will pop up someplace, excrete a press release and then disappear again, sometimes for months on end, leaving behind a trail of unanswered comments and questions. That's not how you gauge the interests and concerns of your marketplace. You can do better than that, and it would be enormously encouraging to others here to see you try. Thank you!

Hi @a_c_green:  Thanks for raising this issue. I had the Community team open the Exec chat thread back up so that I could respond directly to @tenbigdogs.  That member's question was related to returns - and the concern that eBay might be mandating returns policies that are not possible for smaller sellers.  I'm copying my answer, below:  We understand that not everyone can provide 60 day free returns - it simply won't work for everyone's economics, and that for some inventory it isn't expected by buyers. In recognition of that, the option to provide 60d free returns is not a mandate.  We understand that for some merchandise, you might not want to provide returns at all (closeout items).  What we hope to provide is a finite set of returns options -- both to simplify for buyers when they're shopping, and to simplify for sellers when understanding what is competitive for their items. Many ecommerce buyers do expect to find inventory that provides free returns - and for that, we will provide a filter they can use to identify listings that provide that level of return service.

Additional comment: The buyer filter is optional -- not defaulted into in Search.

I hope that answer helps clarify. Thanks! Sarah

Hi @a_c_green: Yup - agree that we want to increase the dialogue -- which is why we're trying the exec chat. If you have suggestions as to ways we can make it more productive and beneficial - I'm all ears.  That doesn't mean I'll agree with everything you suggest - but I will absolutely consider it and look to integrate your suggestions where I can. Thanks in advance for that. Sarah

Hello @sarahbru! I can field that one.

"Peggy" is a fictional TV ad character representing the worst, most unhelpful outsourced Customer Service representative you can imagine. (I should clarify that these ads are played for laughs...) As a Wikipedia article describes it (here), "Peggy is a character used in ads for the Discover Card. In the ads, Peggy is a bearded man with an Eastern European accent and a moth-eaten sweater. Peggy answers the phone for "USA Prime Credit," for whom he gives evasive or unhelpful customer service."

Hi @a_c_green: Thanks for clarifying for me. I am a big fan of the musical "Hamilton" and I was trying to understand whether the member was making the cultural comparison to the character Peggy in that musical but clearly not. I was being compared to a unhelpful bearded man. How discouraging.  But again, thanks for the clarification. Sarah

Hi Sarah,

I admire you...honestly...for coming here and trying to work with folks.

Many of us posters have a hard enough time navigating who and how we respond/interact with and that's just with everyday fellow ebayers.

Few of the folks here are going "OH MY GOODNESS look how Ebay helped me"...some yes...but many of those here who argue on behalf of ebay can come across harsh and condescending.

Yet here you are...pleasant...kind...rolling with the punches.

I will honestly say that your interaction has caused me to smile many times.

If the rest of corporate ebay handled things like you I think small sellers would begin to see changes that would actually help and or at least buffer us from so many changes that have hurt small sellers fr more than helped them.

Your a fine person.

Mr C

I guess she wasn't at Ebay Open 2017 where it came out point blank that sellers of used or collectibles don't fit in the Ebay mold or the Ebay of the future.

Hi papermoneyforme: This is Sarah. I was at eBay Open this year. I'm curious what at the event told you that Used and Collectible seller don't fit in at eBay? That was not the intent at all -- in fact, we had a workshop dedicated to Collectible sellers (hosted by Sam Bright, GM for Collectibles) to speak about the importance of Collectible sellers to our marketplace? I'd be curious what you heard that made you think otherwise. Thanks! Sarah

Thank you for posting! I knew this  thread wouldn't be well accepted but I wanted to get the word out. I was hoping to ease some worried sellers.

In 18 1/2 yrs I have never had any major problem here & very few minor problems. I’ve called CS less than 5 times in 18 yrs and I’ve always gotten the help I needed when I needed it.

I guess I’m an eBay “cheerleader” but so be it. I can’t say anything bad about EBay or it’s employees, if I did it wouldn’t be true.

I know everyone that posted here & they are wonderful people. In fact, several of them are the lifesavers I told you about. I respect & love everyone of them. They have their opinion & I respect their opinion & I respect their feelings. You won’t see me making any rude or argumentative replies because these folks are my friends. Actually some of the posters here have had some bad things happen to them & that’s why they feel the way they do.

If I could make 1 suggestion, it would be to train CS reps better & make sure no matter where the reps live that they know & understand policy. The language barrier has long been a problem for a lot of ebay members.

Sarah, it was great meeting you! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. I hope to chat with you again. Have a great day! 😀

Re: Part time/small sellers

@sarahbru

Hi Sarah,

I was not able to be there on the link for the chat. I have never been able to attend Ebay Live. I have read the thread. This is my view and may not be anybody elses, I do believe some will agree though.

I have sold on Ebay for 18 years and it has been my only venue for at least the last 15 years. I cut out going to shows. Ebay started as a unique marketplace. One of a kind. I understand that there is great competition for online sales and it is also a lucrative market that Ebay would like to have a part of.  Antique , Vintage and used isn't the same animal.  It can be a lucrative market and Ebay was built on it. Ebay is to the best of my knowledge the largest entrepreneurial site. Hundreds of thousands of small sellers depend on their livelihood here. Regardless of their product.  A lot of us are all in (eggs in the basket) with Ebay with no desire to go elsewhere other than as a last resort.

I am asking Ebay to embrace the uniqueness of what the site once was and capitalize on it.

Ebay built the online Entrepreneurial Spirit . Small sellers are lost in searches, views are at an all time low. I was in the beta Promoted listings and it started with multiples, then individual items. I am still using it but with little result since the roll out of PL . Something has changed in the way search engines are working and it has not been a good change for small sellers.

Ebay has many unique items thru small sellers and many sellers are heavily invested here. I personally find that buyers of Antique /Vintage items are more interested in safe shipment than 1 day delivery or free shipping. Free returns are fine if the seller is financially able to absorb the safe packing and shipping to and from. For most of us there is no way to build that in to the price. It is a genuine expense. Most buyers in that arena are more interested in authenticity or uniqueness. I know this market has changed dramatically and is affected by every global event , hurricanes and so on. It is discretionary spending. Trends and generational factors are in play. The market is not dead though. It needs some tweaking.

I personally would love to see a  entrance to the vintage and antique area that would eliminate all the irrelevant items that come up in search when trying to find something. I can't imagine how frustrating it is for buyers. Policy that fits that market for such merchandise.  I believe it would be beneficial for Buyers, Sellers and Ebay.

I love selling on Ebay. Have no desire to go elsewhere. I have had many great customers. I tend to believe in the good of people as opposed to not. Most people are honest. There is way too much fraud occuring on Ebay and it is a lot of the small sellers and new sellers that are paying the price.

@sarahbru: Wellll... I can't speak for @buyselljack2016 here, obviously, just myself, but when no one (yet) knows anything about you in particular, you will indeed get tarred with the same eBay corporate brush at the outset. The trick is make yourself known, distinctive and visible as someone who'll take contacts from the outside world and respond to them, which is always welcome even if it isn't to deliver good news.

I am a Tech Support representative for a major company that you have heard of, and there are plenty of days when it's easy to become convinced that (1) nothing works, and (2) everyone hates us, but (3) the happy customers are the ones who are not writing in, and (4) they're mad at the company, not you/me personally. So as long as you're at least perceived as hearing what's being said, and acting on whatever's possible for you to influence, this can be a pretty, um, lively place to be, even if it's not always bearable. So thank you for coming by today, and hopefully you'll be a steady contact in the future, especially at the Weekly Chats.

Hi. I was on the thread yesterday although I did not participate.

I saw your question, and the EBay executive’s reply. I also saw that she asked for additional input as to why there is a belief that EBay is ignoring small sellers.

and then *ironically* completely ignored the one small seller that gave concrete, valid, legitimate reasons why.

It was a little frustrating to read through the fawning interpersonal fluff just to see the one question I would’ve loved to see an official response to completely and totally ignored.

Honestly I think the numerous “hi! OMG! Nice to see you!” posts should be prohibited as the time frame is so short.

Hi @katfreikh_0:  I'm sorry if the thread was frustrating. Yes - an hour is a short amount of time to have an open chat but it is a start.  I don't agree that friendly posts should be prohibited but I hear your frustration that there were alot of those posts and fewer questions until the end. What I would ask / hope is that folks start asking questions sooner in the hour? Would love to hear your suggestions. Thanks. Sarah

I will agree that the chat was a little friendly & personal but I like chats like that. It gives us insight into the people we are working with. Lately Ebay has become very adversarial. Buyers & sellers don’t trust each other & they don’t trust Ebay. I sure wish that would change & we could go back to truly being a community.

Hi Sarah-

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comment- I appreciate your acknowledgement that I was a frustrated lurker.

I *have* made a suggestion. Prohibit the numerous fawning salutations because the time frame is too short.

My next suggestion would be to answer the tough questions. Since you have had a long and varied career with EBay, surely you have the answers.

Your Chat was advertised as a way to “get to know Sarah, ask questions, and share your insights about selling on eBay.” If you hoped that “folks” would ask questions earlier, perhaps you could have a topic or theme to generate those questions next time.

I don’t think anyone is offended but I am a little surprised that you seem determined in pointing out how badly this thread would be received.

It it really hasn’t been.

Some sellers are skeptical and with some of the EBay execs that have come and gone (hello Jeff?) can you really blame them?

Sarah’s a big girl with an impressive resume. I’m sure she’ll be fine.
