With the new messaging system and format it's entirely possible the initial message, whenever it was sent, went off to never never land. Did you actually get an official return request case through eBay? If so what date did the return request come in, what was the reason for the return and did you respond?

It's just bad writing. There is no previous message; you did not miss anything.
I have occasional return requests and they always start out with this badly-worded notification. Just be sure to respond to the return request promptly. (Either refund if you don't want the item back, or select the Return for Refund option to generate a return label for the buyer, then refund when you receive it back.)
