Overpriced GPU listings for items marked as NEW

Why can't Ebay put a stop to the scalpers selling GPU's listed as NEW for outrageous prices.    At least the new NVIDIA 3000 series and the new AMD series.     This could be temporary but the scalpers are deliberately preventing anybody buying new GPU's by bypassing the regular process of procuring a GPU in the open market by writing bots that scoop the cards away from legitimate PC users who would use the cards and not scalp them for profit.

I am not up on the price of new GPU cards now Ebay vs MSRP, but if eBay made a rule of no price over 20% of trending retail from places like Best Buy and maybe some wholsale outlets.. This would not happen.

It also brings theft and fraud onto the site having a feeding frenzy over these things.

Same thing with game consoles etc.

I disagree.

There would be no listings at only 20% over retail, since that does not allow enough room for a profit after paying fees, packaging, taxes and labour.

Doubling the purchase price may not even be enough to allow for a profitable business. I understand, for example, that the normal markup on jewelry is 400% from wholesale, to cover immediate overheads and to allow for carrying less popular pieces that stay in inventory for years.

So what you guys are telling us that these graphics cards that these scalpers are doing is okay??!!! I don't think so!!! I understand putting it a little over price maybe $100 or $200 dollars more but serious doubling it to make more than a thousand dollars is outrageous!! People are still without jobs and can't afford this kind of price for gifts or personal interest. Ebay needs to step up and telling all these scalpers to stop being so wicked and learned to be fair of what the gpu price really cost. I bet NVIDIA hears about their products being overpriced by these scalpers they would be so disappointed and extremely upset!! In fact, somebody needs to report this nonsense behavior to NVIDIA right now to end this overpricing by sellers now!!

Scalping applies only to the resale of event tickets, and laws against it are not universal and do vary from state to state.  Gouging refers only to the resale of the essentials of life during a government-declared emergency.  The resale of everything else is based on a free market response to supply and demand.

What you're suggesting is that eBay engage in a form of price fixing.  Here's what the Federal Trade commission has to say about that:  "When consumers make choices about what products and services to buy, they expect that the price has been determined freely on the basis of supply and demand... Accordingly, price fixing is a major concern of government antitrust enforcement."

As for people without jobs, why would they even be thinking about buying a luxury item like this, or any other expensive new electronic game or gadget or toy.

Of course NVIDIA knows what their items are selling for on the secondary market. Any company keeps themselves informed about that. It factors into all of their forecasting, marketing and production plans.

If NVIDIA wants to take action against it, they can stop the ones who are buying the cards up when they are available. In fact, they are the only ones who can stop it. If they haven't stopped it yet, then that shows that they don't want to stop it.

Frankly, it is highly unlikely that eBay would entertain the idea of engaging in the illegal practice of price fixing in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act and face the rather stiff penalties attached to it.  I find it very unlikely since eBay makes its money off the percentage of the sales of its customers which are the sellers.  It isn't logical that eBay would wish to fix prices at a low level.  While I suppose that it might be tempting to them to do so at a higher level, to do so at a lower level would be quite illogical.

Re: Overpriced GPU listings for items marked as NEW

I pre-ordered a 3080 and when i got it i sold it instantly for a $500 profit. If i had held on to it and mined cryptocurrency for 4-5 months i would probably have made $1500 on top of the cost of the card.

The cryptocurrency boom and low production volumes of gpus is what caused the shortages.. the bubble does appear to be popping as we speak so the market could be flooded with cheap gpus.

Market interference is a no-no in my book, however the individual gpu brands could have done more to prevent them from being purchased by the pallets by Chinese miners and made sure they were more fairly distributed throughout the world. Even if ebay tried to force the prices down then sellers would only stop listing them here because they sell easily elsewhere which is also safer.
