I’m writing this for my husband because his computer is having issues. He sold some toner, was paid for it, and did not realize it until today because of his computer and also because he’s very ill. At this time, his account says, in red letters, that the shipping is overdue. He’s unable to leave a message for the buyer; he does want to fill the order. What should he do?

You have a computer or you wouldn't be able to post here.
Go to his account buy the shipping label and ship.
You will be late, but one Defect will not destroy your account.
Use tracking. Upgrade the shipping to a faster service. Yes, you pay for it. Your error , your responsibility.
Personally, I would not contact the buyer.
If he notices a delay he will contact you. Be capable of telling him that there was a short unavoidable delay, but you upgraded the shipping at NO EXTRA COST TO HIM and here is the tracking number and the last place it was recorded in transit. You might also add the LAST estimated date for arrival.
Best wishes to your husband for a speedy recovery. Take care of yourself too.
PS: Don't make any excuses, even truthful ones like your husband's illness will not go over well. Make your communications, if any, about how HE will benefit.

@shelleevan-5 Since he is ill, log on to his account, fill the order and ship ASAP.
ETA: It may be a good idea to put his account on 'time away' until he gets back onto his feet again.

How overdue is it? Why can’t the buyer be contacted?

Not sure why you have to ask here when you could have just asked your husband. To answer your question, go to the post office and ship the item. You have an option to print the label at home, or just pay when you get there.

Hi, if I were you, I'd immediately log in to the eBay account using another device and try to contact the buyer again, you might get lucky who knows. Tell the buyer the issue, and tell him that you will ship the item as soon as possible. If the buyer wants a refund, simply cancel the order and refund him. If the buyer gives you more time, ship the item by yourself as soon as possible.
You don't need your husband to ship it, ship it with a thank you note. And also consider selecting a faster courier service than the one in the listing, that way the buyer will receive it soon. If you can't deal with orders, simply put the account on time away(vacation mode) or increase the handling time, or select the longest shipping time available in your shipping policy until your husband can deal with the orders. Don't try to mark as shipped and ship it couple of days later, the tracking number will automatically provide the shipping details(think) to the system when you upload the tracking number in the future.

Log out of your eBay account, and log into your husband's account on your computer.
Send the buyer a message with an apology for the delay and a promise to ship the item ASAP. If the shipment is very overdue, ask the buyer if he wants to cancel the transaction -- he might have already bought the item elsewhere.
Then ship the item via Priority Mail or maybe something faster.

Sometimes life is a lot easier if you just handle a situation. It is not complicated. Take the toner to the post office. Ship it priority mail with tracking. If it is a triple or quadruple pack they can put the shipping label right on the product. That's how my toner arrives. Or use a box. Problem solved.
Then update the shipping status with the tracking number on the item before you put the account on vacation "time away" mode until the account can be open for business again.
Best wishes to your husbands health.

That's great advice, but I'd rearrange it a bit: Put the account on "Time away" first before starting to prepare the package for shipping.
