Did you mean:

Once again -- fees

Let's say I sold something for $7.99, but out of that $7.99 I paid $4.00 for shipping which leaves $3.99 profit, more or less. I know eBay is going to take a % of the 7.99, but what is it the percentage? And what then did I actually get from that sale as it stands?

I was wondering when someone was going to mention that. Your time spent working at selling that $7.99 item with Free Shipping is time that you did not spend doing something else, so while you don't have to assign yourself a dollar figure or an hourly rate, your time invested in selling that item does have relevance.

I generally use a range of $19.95 - $29.95 as opening prices for my auctions, and while I might go less than $19.95 on a Fixed Price item, I usually do that only for items that are a quick listing and an easy low-cost shipment. (They may also be items that have been kicking around here for so long that I neither know nor care what their original cost was.)

I also think that (although I have no statistics to prove it) a mix of inexpensive items related to my higher-priced stuff helps to bring in views via the Seller's Other Items gallery that eBay generates, so someone originally looking at one item of mine may end up bidding on another.

Re: Once again -- fees

if you sell a $10 item expect to pay ebay 1.30 (13%) roughly....

Hmm, I was thinking that 12.55% is a lot, but I know eBay has to make money, they're not doing this for free. OTOH, forget now what I paid for an item. OK, don't forget it. But let's say I sell an item for $12.00 and I pay for shipping. So take away let's pretend $8 for shipping that makes 12.55% of $12. which comes to about $1.50.  So now since I paid $8 for shipping, that would mean from that $12 I would get (forget what I paid for it originally right now) about $2.50. Wow is all I have to say. Correct me if I'm wrong on this. Ain't worth it. but maybe my math is wrong-ish. (Glad I'm having this conversation.)

So you give away $8 on a $12 product, and you’re worried about eBay fees???

Re: Once again -- fees

That would, of course, depend on the shipping cost and state sales tax, if any, on that transaction.
