Once again, eBay puts a large payment on hold for no valid reason, only that they can.

I've been selling on eBay for over 24 years and have a spotless record as a seller. This the 3rd time eBay has put my funds on hold after I have made a big sell.

In the past few years, 3 big sells and 3 cash grabs by eBay. I could have paid down my credit card, instead eBay gets to keep my money and I'm out $200 interest.

eBay Customer Support, is always telling me "We appreciate your loyalty to eBay for 24 years." Then show me some appreciated and quite treating me like cr@p! $10,000 means a lot more to me that it does to eBay.

Customer Support says something like, "If you read the agreement . . . yada yada yada . . . paraphrased {it says eBay can screw you over whenever we want.}"

Why Would a long-time seller with 100% reputation do it?

Once the buyer leaves feedback, there is no longer a reason for eBay to hold MY MONEY.  But they can because they can.

A buyer can file a SNAD even after having left positive feedback.

eBay is holding the funds of your high value sale for 30 days, which is the number of days your buyer has to file with them. That’s the valid reason.

Buyers can still  be unhappy even AFTER positive feedback is left.

There's literally nothing unusual about that. If you suddenly make a purchase or sale/transfer an amount of money that's much, much larger than you normally do, ANY financial institution is going to do some checks to make sure that everything is on the up-and-up.

I once loaned a friend $1,500 for some emergency car repairs and sent it to her via PayPal. PayPal immediately froze my account until I verified that it was really me who had made that transaction because I didn't usually send or receive amounts of money that large. My credit card company will text me if I make a large charge to verify that it really is me making that charge. This is good-- you WANT companies to be absolutely 100% sure that nothing screwy is going on with your account.

All I can say is I would happily wait 30 days for 21k after ebay fees, after selling some shoes. I honestly think they are holding the funds to make sure everything is all good and the buyer is 100% happy and its not a fraudulent charge,so that way they don't run into issues later. Could also be bank related. I know it has to be frustrating but considering the amount, they have to make sure regardless of your seller status or the positive feedback recieved. Could be a high dollar transaction that the buyer hasn't before or not very often, or with a new payment method. No telling.

24 years selling.  1,000s of items sold.  The buyer has a strong history as well.  eBay is just doing a money grab because they can.

Because of these holds, eBay is no longer a place to raise urgent funds for pressing needs.

If it's those Scottie Pippen shoes, I'm not even vaguely surprised the funds are being held for 30 days.

I don't know of any website where you can sell stuff at that amount of money and not have some kind of hold or processing lag.

While clearly you don't like the holds, not so sure I'd like them either.  Ebay does do it for reason.  You may not agree with them, but then that isn't something that is required.  Ebay says it is a valid reason, you say it isn't.  Ebay wins since it is their site.

Additionally, eBay may place a transaction hold on funds depending on your seller status or the category you're selling in:

  • New or infrequent sellers will experience transaction holds while eBay confirms that their items have been successfully delivered. This helps sellers become established and build a strong selling history on eBay. In limited circumstances, new sellers may experience holds for up to 21 days.
  • Previously restricted or suspended sellers will experience transaction holds for the 30 days after the restriction or suspension is lifted, while eBay confirms that the items have been successfully delivered.
  • High priced items or unusual selling patterns may lead to transaction holds for up to 30 days to help us ensure that buyers don't have any issues with the order.
  • The authentication process may lead to transaction holds for up to 30 days until the authenticity of items sold with eBay's Authenticity Guarantee can be confirmed.

So now the ball is in YOUR court ......you can decide where you want to sell your future big sale items. Ebay has already told you their view on how they handle big ticket items.

Anyone who has their own website would not have such a hold. There are literally millions of websites that do not have a hold or lag time.

If you make an unusually large deposit, your bank may place a hold on bank account funds until they can verify that these funds will clear. The same applies to multiple large deposits made in a short-time period.

Unfortunately, you wouldnt be the first seller to have received a positive feedback, then two weeks later have that buyer open a snad case against you. Or to even go to their cc for a refund, without having to return the item. Thats why Ebay has never accepted feedback as a done deal in a transaction.

Silver lining – I wish I had some thing laying around that was worth $25,000 on eBay.

The hold is absolutely justified. It isn’t necessarily about you, but about the buyer, or even just a latent defect that no one knew about the reason for the hold is really obvious. You stated it – you need money to pay bills. What happens if you get the money and then two weeks later the buyer find some thing that he doesn’t like?  What if the ultimate disposition is that you need to refund the buyer? You have already spent your money on bills, so where will the money come from?

Emphasis on "their own website" - not a marketplace on someone else's bandwidth. A bit of a difference there. I'm surprised there wasn't escrow involved.

$10,000 means a lot more to me that it does to eBay.

eBay offers buyers a Money Back Guarantee, which is a big reason why buyers use the site. The minute eBay puts that $10,000 in your bank account, eBay is on the hook for that guarantee if you slip off into the night.

In the past few years, 3 big sells and 3 cash grabs by eBay.

What was the "cash grab"? Are you saying eBay never released the funds from the first two big sales?

I could have paid down my credit card, instead eBay gets to keep my money and I'm out $200 interest.

After the first two big sales that came with holds, you should have known this was coming.
