Next move

Buyer of a golf club claims to have received a roll of cellophane in the box. He claims UPS told him “the box was damaged inside a facility and they could not reconcile the pieces”. His assertion now is it will be a waste to “send an empty box” back to me.

What’s the next move?

@1funkydude

For purposes of discussion, has the buyer filed a claim with eBay or just messaging you about it?

I question the veracity since UPS doesn't usually tell anybody anything.  Try it for yourself and see what you can find out about your shipment.  Tracking say "delivered"?  Anything else?

Have you asked the buyer for the UPS information they post to a box that has damage or missing contents?

He started a return two weeks ago.
Tracking says delivered and nothing else.

Re: Next move

If the buyer files a INAD (item not as described) he will be required to send "something" back, even if it's a empty box or a roll of cellophane. When you received it you will be required to refund the buyer.

Normally you would never do this, but in this care you might want to consider just refunding they buyer without having him return the item to prevent having to pay return shipping on a empty box.

As far as the lost golf club, it is up to you, the seller/shipper to take this matter up with UPS.

Sorry this happened to you.

Re: Next move

That can happen.   Always use strapping tape the stuff with string in on over size boxes and be sure it over wraps itself a good two times or it does not help.   That keeps boxes from coming apart id they get stuck in machinery.

Re: Next move

If UPS told the person the box was damaged then UPS should pay you the insurance cost. Did you call UPS to confirm what the buyer said and to file a claim for insurance.

Re: Next move

His reason was “wrong item sent”.
I’m trying to figure out if there’s any advantage in making him send back this thing he claims to have received.

Re: Next move

I could not find a golf club in your sold listings so not sure if it was on this account or another one. First ask the buyer to kindly retain the original box and packing as well as providing you the information from UPS regarding the damage. Either you or the buyer can open a claim with UPS but since the buyer has already opened a claim with eBay this may be in your court.

Once you contact UPS they will provide you with instructions on how to work through the claim. If they are anything like USPS this may involve having the buyer take the item into the UPS store so they can examine the packing and damage. Over the years I had to deal with a couple of claims with USPS and success in resolving those claims takes some assistance from the buyer.

Re: Next move

Something seems off with the claim UPS delivered something else in the box.

Different account.
We’ll go through the claims process.
What about this thing he claims to have received? Do we make him return it?

Totally agree that is why you should call UPS. I cannot believe UPS would still deliver it when they admitted it was something else.

That's up to you since you will be the one to pay the return shipping.

Re: Next move

But does it give us any leverage in the process? Does him returning something else affect his claim?

Your last question would be a good one for UPS. I am not sure how UPS works but on claims with USPS they want the receiver, aka the buyer, to hold onto the package and the item. If they return it the claim becomes void. With USPS they will ask the buyer to take the item and packing into a local PO for inspection and if the PMG agrees USPS is at fault they will generally offer a couple of options to settle the claim. One is USPS keeps the packing and the item and fully honors the claim. The other is a repair option but that probably is not valid if it is not even the right item.

Most important aspect is communication between you the buyer and UPS.

Communication’s a tough piece because he’s belligerent. And likely lying.
