New situation

I've been selling and buying on eBay a long time and something happened to me I've never seen before age maybe I'm just being fragile: I had a buyer buy an item today and send me a message saying to pack it carefully that he doesn't want it to arrive broken and then he stated that he would leave "NEGATIVE FEEDBACK" if it arrived damage. Then he signed with his full name job and title. I'm hearing alarm bells what do you all think?

Pack carefully.

I assume this is for the 14" alligator figure. Given that it has no moving parts and basically just needs a cushioned ride, I would wrap it in a couple layers of bubble wrap, place in a good-fitting box (i.e. you can shake it without hearing anything moving inside), then add another layer of bubble wrap and an outer box. Should be fine.

As for Mr. Warmth, it would be interesting to check his Feedback Left for Others, but my guess is that he's had one bad experience in the past and is paranoid about it happening again. I know I've been on the receiving end of countless packages where I wonder what the seller was thinking, or how the item survived the trip (assuming it did).

Probably bought something and had it arrive broken before, leading to extreme disappointment. No alarm bells here. People are sometimes a bit eclectic or weird...it doesn't mean they're a scammer.

He's just asking that you pack it well which you should be doing in the first place.

I would just ignore the comment.

Pack it well (like i'm sure you usually do) and ship it.

I had someone who started putting "DC Lawyer" in their messages to me.  🙄  ROFL.

Ignore it - they probably DID get an awful packing job (I certainly have) but some people have to pile it high and deep, for some reason.  Just pack it with your usual meticulous care.

I would report the buyer immediately......it's a threat of negative feedback......if he's done it once he'll do it again

Just hit the report buyer tab on the sale

Ehhh. If you're citing feedback extortion I'd argue it isn't. Asking the seller to do something that would be expected in the course of business isn't really a threat.

It's just someone throwing quasi internet weight around that doesn't really hold weight or substance, that's all.

If you're that thin skinned, eBay is probably not the marketplace for you. Asking someone to pack something well is not forcing someone into meeting their demands. Not by a long shot.

  • Threaten to use feedback or detailed seller ratings (DSRs) in an attempt to force sellers into meeting their demands. For example, buyers can't threaten to leave negative feedback unless the seller pays for return shipping, when the seller's return policy in the listing didn't state free returns

Thanks for everyone's responses. I went halfway. I'll still send the product well like always but I did point out that the threats were not professional. I probably shouldn't have done that but I couldn't help myself.

It would be like if I went to a restaurant and I place an order then tell the server that if the meal isn't exactly what I want I will flame you on yelp. The keyboard just makes people more courageous.

Stay safe community thanks as always

I think many sellers do not pack properly. If the OP typically buys fragile items, it is possible he/she has received many broken ones.

Telling a seller to pack well is not a threat.  But telling a seller that the buyer will lead negative feedback if the item arrives broken is indeed feedback extortion and is prohibited.  A seller can pack as well as possible and still have an item break in transit as what happens after they drop it off is beyond the sellers control.  I would report the buyer and cancel the sale.

Oh noooo... That is not halfway. That is giving as good as you got. Or lowering yourself to his level.

And in that analogy the server listens to all that and then tells you that the threats were not professional. See where that is going?

Just be the better man and set a good example for secure packing. Understand that some people have had worse experiences before you came along. And that lecturing them on their attitude is not going to improve it.

Yeah you are right on both counts. I tried that once and that was like the third time I got kicked out of the local applebees

I don't think a couple of layers of bubble wrap is enough. It needs enough bubble wrap stuffed under its head  and wrapped around the head so the head won't  break off  if the box is turned upside down and dropped from 8 feet. After you wrap it in bubble wrap it needs to go in a box surrounded with 2-3 inches of peanuts or foam padding on all sides. Then double box it with more padding between the boxes.

I don't think it will ship for $9 because USPS charges dim weight when the package is over 12 inches.
