New situation

I've been selling and buying on eBay a long time and something happened to me I've never seen before age maybe I'm just being fragile: I had a buyer buy an item today and send me a message saying to pack it carefully that he doesn't want it to arrive broken and then he stated that he would leave "NEGATIVE FEEDBACK" if it arrived damage. Then he signed with his full name job and title. I'm hearing alarm bells what do you all think?

Threatening a negative  to get something not in the listing is feedback extortion.

Thereatening a negative if they don't get what they bought (the item as described) is not feedback extortion.

Threatening a negative for any reason is feedback extortion.

Just cancel the sale.  You don't have to be threatened by any Buyer.

I just explain that I ship 1000 orders a year (or whatever) & always package carefully.  I wouldn't cancel, I'd just fulfill the order.  Just the other day, I was reading a thread on here about crazy things people sent in a poly bag with no packaging.  There are a LOT of sellers who are clueless about how to pkg.  I don't mind giving a little reassurance.

There is no rule for a buyer leaving a negative feedback if they receive a broken item. It is not extortion unless the person is demanding something. In this case he just wants what was ordered.

@ian.a8404_6   They always agree  with the caller. If you do get a negative feedback for sending a broken item do not be surprised if the feedback stays. There is no reason to cancel so if you do you have to lie.

My take on this is apparently a little different than the majority.

This person has possibly received at least one item that was packaged so poorly that it was unusable and unrecognizable.  He's just being cautious.   And, full name job and title.  Is he your State Senator? A TV star?

It is not true that threatening negative for any reason is feedback extortion.

Feedback extortion is to threaten a negative to get something that is not part of the original listing.

It is not extortion to say if you don't  ship my item by the handling time I will leave you negative feedback. 

It is extortion to say I will leave negative feedback if you don't ship my item today when the seller has until tomorrow midnight to ship.

Here's my take.  The guy wants what he purchased to get to him safely.  

 

If by chance, it would break during shipping and if he leaves negative feedback, because of the original message, that would (probably) be removed under feedback extortion. 

 

Pack right, like we all do with fragile items, you'll be just fine.

I would ignore the message:

pack and ship the item as I would normally do.

If you haven't already packed it, I suggest wrapping it in tissue paper or other paper (maybe not newspaper as ink can transfer) before the bubble wrap. Upon occasion, bubble wrap can stick and leave a mark. Also with some of the smaller details, paper would protect them from getting stuck in the bubble wrap.

 

You buyer may be paranoid because a previous item arrived damaged and the seller blew it off. You could, if you want, send a follow up.

 

Dear buyer. Thank you for the purchasing my item. I understand your concern about packing and shipping as many items may arrive not packed properly. I assure you that I pack with care and will protect you item. Upon receiving it, if, for any reason, you have a concern, please contact me. I apologize for my earlier email, it was a knee-jerk reaction.  You item will be/has been shipped and the tracking number is ..... Thank you again for your purchase.

 

Customer service can something be challenging, especially when the customer starts off in defense mode. My boss at my first "real" job taught me to always begin correspondence with a "thank you" even if it's "thank you for contacting me." It can set a tone, let the customer know you hear them and then give you segue to the rest of the message. That practice has served me well over the years, even when the last thing I want to do is play nice.

 

It's an interesting item, if it's the alligator. Buyer may be a collector, it may be a gift, he may be replacing something he once had, so he could be emotionally invested. Oh, he could just be an obnoxious jerk.

 

It would probably cost too much but you could always triple box the thing just for fun. 🙂
