Never dealt with a buyer like this before - Need help from other sellers

We sold Super Mario Bros. 2 (Nintendo NES, 1988) WATA Certified 8.5 CIB IMP Manual on September 13 and ship to buyer on September 14. Same day, buyer opens an "Item not received" case claiming we shipped his order late and wants a partial refund for making him feel frustrated. I uploaded the tracking details showing we shipped his order on time with estimated delivery on Saturday, September 16. He repeats his rant and I told him no. I will not issue him a partial refund for shipping his order on time and if he doesn't like it, he can take it up with ebay customer service.

Today, his order was delivered, and he escalated the case but later loses. Now he's upset because eBay CS sided with us. He opens a return case today, claim reason, "Doesn't match description or photos" claiming the same thing in the "item not received" case. I uploaded all the photos from the listing to the case, showing him exactly what he ordered. Next, I told him if he's unhappy with his purchase, send it back.

His reply, "That's also a violation of your description as you don't accept returns and I plan on keeping the product since it's not that I am unhappy with the product, It's that I am dissatisfied with the variance from the shipping time that was stated by you and it shipped after 24 hours. It's not a difficult or unreasonable fix to refund me and see things through the lens of the customer."

The violation part he's referring to my comment in the case saying to return it if he's unhappy. My employees are telling me to send a return label, which means I have to eat the loss of shipping, then block buyer. Part of me wants to give into buyer demand and then block him. The other part of me doesn't want to give into buyer demand because it will invite more of his flock to rinse and repeat this pattern.

Any ideas?

Re: Never dealt with a buyer like this before - Need help from other sellers

WMMV but in my experience if the buyer opens a return and doesn't follow through, any negative feedback will be automatically removed.

To the OP, my only response to any request for a partial refund is "I'm sorry you're not satisfied with your purchase.  Please return for a full refund".  If they open an INAD, I approve the return and pay for the label.  If they open a regular return, I let them pay for the label, and then I laugh and buy beer with the money I saved by not paying for the return label.

In either case, block block block block block block block block.

A lot of the time, no response is even needed.  One neg I received said "there a joke".   No response needed to that one, I figured.

Approve the return, send the return label. Deal with any fallout if it becomes a reality.

Re: Never dealt with a buyer like this before - Need help from other sellers

UPDATE: Saturday, we accepted return. Ceasing the communication line in return case and provided buyer with ebay return label. Since Saturday, ebay given buyer 24 days (17 business days) to ship item back. Unsure why buyer gets 3 weeks to return, when he clearly doesn't want too and plans to escalate in the end. Just like before in the "item not received" case.

robbie31415 - Thank you for the link, buyer reported and reviewing our report.
keeneth68631 - Agreed.
ajs_coins_and_alchemy - 3) Sometimes. Depends on the comment.
soh.maryl - He didn't. Re-read our OP.
vintage-camerastuff - Agreed.

It is not against Ebay policy to ask for a partial refund. Feel free to post a link to the policy where you believe it says that.

A seller is not obligated to agree to a partial refund in any case. He can request that the item be sent back to him before refunding if he wants it back first.

Yes, it is against ebay's policies to demand partial refunds. According to ebay's abusive buyer policy, it states "Not Allowed: Requesting a partial refund without returning the item."

Sellers can offer partial refunds at their discretion, but buyers are not allowed to demand them. ebay changed the rules years ago in response to abusive buyers who demanded partial refunds on virtually every item they bought.

Read the policy yourself: https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/rules-policies-buyers/buying-practices-policy?id=4374

Well, that persons grammar was a joke 😉 How can someone take a neg feedback seriously if they don't use proper grammar?

-----------------------------------------------------

A negative feedback I got? They horribly misspelled honest...very awkward

"Do not buy any coin from this person, bad manner, not horney."

I responded to this feedback because I felt I needed to.

This person was kind of a nut. Told me they received my coin a week and a half later than they actually did. (Delivery status showed delivered on time week and a half prior). They told me it was the completely wrong coin. (I remember handling their right coin, and I didn't ship or handle ANYTHING like what they described so not a mix up of pkgs and what they described was DRASTIC.) Refused to send me a pic of the coin they received, claimed they couldn't b/c were out of town on business, told me to look at the coin myself when its returned to me. Kept asking me for my return address, so I told them it's on the pkg they apparently "received today", so they should still have it. They apparently dug thru their trash, gave me return addresses of 3 diff coin dealers I know, but couldnt find my packaging/return address. (Funny, they took their trash with them on their business trip? Did they forget my padded envelope at home before their trip?) Also couldn't provide me one simple detail about the pkg they received, which is funny because there are 4 fairly unique things abt my pkgs you could mention, from the color of the mailer to the "Thank You" note I include, to the two different "holders" the coin is in, one inside another. So it arrived 8 days after it did, was the totally wrong coin which it wasn't, couldn't send me pics because you were out of town but apparently carry your trash with you on trips, and couldnt remember a single detail about the way the item came. Needless to say, I had fun with this person and knew I was getting a negative from the beginning of the mess, and didn't care one bit.

Re: Never dealt with a buyer like this before - Need help from other sellers

I don't believe it's against eBay policies to request a partial refund in general.  Demanding it and threatening negative feedback would be, but that's because of the policy against feedback extortion. Edit: I take it back, I see your link now.

@mintwaresdo nothing and send no more messages until an official return case is opened (sorry, missed that a case had been opened) until you receive the item back.  The buyer may have even lost his MBG if he's pulled this too many times before and would be unable to open a case in that instance, but regardless, you have no obligation to refund him without receiving your item back.  Also, I didn't see this mentioned yet (though I haven't finished reading the thread), add him to your Blocked Buyers List immediately.  Definitely don't want to deal with him again.
