Need clarification on eBay's search results of Promoted Listings

Since eBay no longer displays duplicate listings if you have the item also promoted, I've been a little confused about how my items show up in search results. I hope somebody can answer this.

Since this change, a good amount of my sales has been through Promoted listings. But since ALL of my items are promoted, how am I making some sales without a customer clicking on the Promoted listing? Does eBay randomly decide to display an item of mine as a regular listing sometimes?

The reason I ask is because when I have other promotions (such as volume discounts), it normally displays"Save 5% when you buy 2+" or something like that within the search result. But when the search result shows my item as Promoted, it doesn't display these other promotions that I have set for that item and that's pretty frustrating.

Plenty of ways.....

A search results page only has x number of promoted listings but there can be many more listings that sellers have promoted so when your promoted listing is not show others are but your regular listing may match the search criterea and be shown.

A buyer may click on "see sellers other items".

They may find their way to your listing from an outside link.

They may find your listing via a marketing email.

I'm sure there are other ways as well.

When you promote an item, it is not always promoted. 

Sometimes it is promoted, and sometimes it is not. 

When it is promoted, it does not also appear as unpromoted. 

When it is not promoted, it does not also appear as promoted.

I still see the promoted as well as the original listing on the search page for many items so Ebay may have rolled back on that due to all the publicity it raised and the fact so many decided to drop promoted listings all together which met less money in eBay's pocket.

Sometimes they found your item from the promoted listing. but then clicked into your store then chose directly from another listing.

Also are many 3rd party sites that I think are ebay partners, that host our items on their site... that link directly to the item itself, not from searches. I found some of them when googling my own listings before. 

Some regular buyers will also save link to your store and only buy from there too.
