Need Advice on Issuing Coupons Please

I checked old posts but need some current advice.  I sell an eclectic mix of Levis, Dishes, Flatware and housewares.  I’m considering issuing 10 or 15% off coupons after a buyer makes a purchase.

   - Do the coupons work well? easy for the buyer?

   - Looks like the discount applies to the item price, not the total, right?

   - Those of you who use them, do they seem to generate sales?

I don't use coupons, but I'm bumping your post for more visibility so hopefully someone that uses coupons will find it.
