More changes to feedback

eBay redesigned this page: https://www.ebay.com/fdbk/leave_feedback

A pop-up now appears. If you had FB comments you always used you can no longer access the quick auto-fill list that browsers saved for you. I'm pretty sure @mr_lincoln is one of the sellers that liked using browser auto-fill for FB on that page.

You can no longer X items (like cancelled sales) to remove them from the list.

This is what the pop-up looks like from the seller's side:

feedbackpage-seller-2024.png

With this page switching to a pop-up for each item, there is no longer a "quick" option for a seller to leave a lot of feedback at once unless they use automatic feedback or use bulk feedback with the same [up to 5] stored comments for every buyer from the seller hub orders page.

As a buyer I don't have any purchases waiting for FB today to confirm, but I suspect this means the work-around to avoid leaving a forced star rating product review as a buyer will no longer work. @eburtonlab

Here's a buyer > seller feedback screen.  It looks (?) like the star review can be x'd away.

Lemme know if you'd like more screens, step-wise.

You can X out the info box, is that what you mean?

On your screen there is no asterisk next to 'How would you rate this item?'. See below for a contrasting item where the product review is not optional.

Select a rating (pos or whatever), type in a comment, then see if you can submit the FB or if the button is grayed out unless you leave a required star rating product review like this:

feedback-productreview.jpg

I initially thought you'd have no problem leaving FB without filling out the product review since there is no asterisk next to that field indicating it's required @gurlcat , unlike the above screenshot. But then I noticed there is no asterisk next to 'Tell us what you think' in your screenshot either, and that's always been a required field. So your screenshot could be a programming error where they forgot the asterisks. Or perhaps they intentionally ditched the asterisks and instead chose to use '(optional)' next to optional fields as that's also different between your screenshot and mine.

Yup, no star review, no blue button.  That's a shame.

Thanks for confirming. It means as a buyer I will rarely leave feedback anymore. I've seen other buyers say they will intentionally leave 1 or 3 star reviews for every product which I think is kinda crappy because the low star ratings hurt sellers - it doesn't prove any kind of point to eBay. Not leaving FB would prove more of a point to eBay.

As a seller I wonder why that page does not let a seller access their stored comments. Also, why are sellers limited to only 5 stored comments?

Here is how it looks from the Buyer side, using the "leave feedback" link at the bottom of my feedback page:

It appears that the "rate this item" is no longer optional.

The "rate this item" has never been optional for me. It's a ridiculous idea.

Thanks @eburtonlab . I noticed in your screenshot "did this arrive on time" does not show the original EDD (estimated delivery date) like it used to. So buyers are now just guessing if the item arrived on time? Selecting no if the item didn't arrive fast enough for their expectations?

The switchover in language to "Tell us more about this item" a few months ago was a clear indicator of eBay shifting feedback into product reviews, reinforced by making DSRs (the part that evaluates seller/transaction) optional.

Which begs the question - if seller FB has essentially been converted to product reviews, why do we still have FB for buyers?

Edit to add: and if feedback comments are now all about product reviews then whatever feedback % a seller has is based on whether or not the buyer liked the product, not whether or not they had a good experience with the seller.

Noticed another big change to that page: It says "sold by" but there's no indication of buyer ID. Sellers of MQ listings will have no clue which buyer they're leaving FB for if they use that page with the new layout.

Can you make sure someone on the eBay feedback team is logging all the comments here kyle@ebay devon@ebay ? Thanks!

As a seller leaving feedback for a buyer I do NOT like this change. I don't sell a lot, average one sale a day, so I don't use the automatic feedback for buyers. I can't leave a negative or neutral for a bad buyer and I sure as h won't leave a positive.

What I don't like; 1) not being able to close out the ones I don't want to leave feedback for 2) not seeing when and if it was delivered 3) No quick auto fill.

I am amazed at the amount of changes they are constantly making to this site and I've only been selling for about four years. I've seen changes made only to be changed back a few days later. Changes made that didn't seem to make any difference but it still took a few days to get use to a different way of doing the same task. Then changes like this one that just seem to be going in the wrong direction.

I'm probably being naive here (especially because I don't sell very many new items) but when I saw this new feature I guessed it was yet another example of eBay having a good intent but bad execution.  Like to address the problem of buyers negging sellers for aspects of an item that the seller had no hand in (and if they were so dissatisfied they could return it rather than smear the seller).  So it seemed to me eBay was trying to compartmentalize the buyer's reaction; give them a way to give official separate feedback for two completely different aspects of their experience.

But when I look at that screen what I see is plenty of potential for the exact opposite outcome.  And I don't mean the star mandate.  -Sure I do agree it should not be required, in fact buyers shouldn't be forced to complete any particular feedback component if all they want to do is address this or that one.  But what I find particularly unfortunate is the placement, the order, of these components.  By wedging the mandated item star review between the positive, neutral, negative SELLER rating above, and the comment box below, it could absolutely give a buyer the impression that their item satisfaction is definitely supposed to be part of which of the top cartouches they select (pos, neut, neg), and then the comment box is where they can explain either or both of the two selections they just made.  But that won't do anything about the mathematical impact of the seller review, on that seller's % score.

With that framing, if the buyer's level of item satisfaction is far more profound than anything else about the transaction, they might base their response to ALL THREE required feedback components on that.  -Give a positive score, 5-star review, and glowing comments for a purchase of Razzle Dazzle car wax because man their car shines like a bass boat now! (but the seller is dropshipping from Amazon or Walmart, and didn't even reply to the buyer's question before the purchase, but that's all forgotten now).  Or they could give a negative score, 1-star review, and scathing comments because the wax made their car look worse than before (and even that could be because they didn't read the directions, and oh by the way the seller did everything perfectly).

This confusion would be especially true for newer buyers who don't remember the pre-star mandate, and/or buyers who are clueless about third party platform commerce, like they just think they are buying "from eBay" rather than from a regular person, a senior citizen trying to pay bills that exceed their SS checks, a single mom trying to avoid eviction when child support checks inexplicably stop (that's me right now!) or whatever.

And yeah that was already a hazard before the star mandate!  But if eBay's intent was to force the buyer to see item satisfaction as a distinct and separate thing to quantify, they sure made that clear as mud by putting it square in the MIDDLE, between the parts where they're to quantify and qualify how the seller performed!

@wastingtime101 Is that what you meant when you said

or is there some way I'm not aware of, where item star reviews now figure into the math of seller metrics???

And while I'm at it I guess I should make sure I'm not mistaken about this: Pre-owned item transactions don't have this feature in feedback, right?

@gurlcat Low star product ratings hurt:

- sellers of multi quantity listings

- any seller that may list the same item in the future

A low star product review gives buyers the impression the product is lousy. Would you want to purchase an item with 1-3 star product reviews or an item with 4-5 star product reviews? Would seeing a product rating of 1 star turn you off? For many buyers the answer is yes.

Those star product reviews appear in numerous places. Rather than re-invent the wheel I am going to quote what @eburtonlab took the time to put together for another discussion on this topic. Here's his post:

@eburtonlab wrote:

The star ratings typically appear under "Ratings and Reviews" at the bottom of the item listing. In the past, the ratings were strictly part of the review process and only products with reviews had ratings, but now it is possible to find items with ratings but no reviews, like this one:

Product page:

Item page:

The ratings may also appear in the search results under the item title:

Interesting question...

One thing that gave me a chuckle was that the form appears to have been copied from a template that originally had three rather wide buttons in a row, for Positive, Neutral and Negative, displayed proportionally so that each button took up one-third of the allotted width.

But when modifying the form for Buyer Feedback, the Neutral and Negative buttons didn't apply, so they were removed, leaving that one remaining Positive button to expand across the entire width, so now you have this ludicrously wiiiiiiiiiiide Positive button across most of the screen, even though it has no remaining purpose.

As buyers can only receive Positive feedback, there's really no need to have the button at all, but because this form was apparently created by using the Seller feedback form code as a source, you still have to whack the stupid button before you can complete and submit the form. That's just lazy programming.

I submit my buyers' feedback from the Actions column of my Sold Items page, which still uses the older form offering stored feedback comments and such. Fairly quick and easy.
