Mercari and Etsy Commercials during football championship Games this weekend

I noticed a few Mercari and Etsy commercials during the NFL Football Games Yesterday.  I would assume the commercials were costly.  Sorry to say I did not see any ebay commercials.  Read this fast folks as it will be sent to Siberia real quick

If I was in charge, I would not advertise either! The NFL Super Bowl advertising is out of control! It use to be that you enjoyed watching the game and new commercials, but for about 5+ years easy, you can view the commercials on-line before the Super Bowl. Dumb move!

It's a racket! What is it now these days, 2 million for 30 seconds? Give me a break! You imagine what 2 million can do for people dealing with poverty?

Another issue is that the team season ticket holders get screwed by cooperate America for tickets  / privilege's  so they can entertain clients who probably never went to a regular season game along with every NFL player getting tickets which they have a broker sell for them.  

eBay needs to do some basic TV advertising. Daytime / nighttime, I don't really care! Better than viewing those commercials that are nothing but scams or they try to put fright in you on how your felling. I don't think I need to provide examples. Everyone knows what I'm talking about. 

NBC announced they are ending sports at the end of the year. Moving to USA Network. Not sure where that puts Notre Dame football with their contract, but I will not buy service in order to watch Notre Dame. I read in the past that the day will come where we pay for each sport we watch and we may just be heading that way.

I do not put much faith in commericals.those  2 advertise because the leader/ebay does not have to.....

I think mercari and the others metioned from time to time are trying to get to where ebay is already.

you can advertise all you want but if the seller experience is not good then people are going to go with a proven winner to sell and thats ebay.

lots of people on this forum have come to the conclusion that ebay is the best venue for what they sell.

besides..............ebay does bill itself as the worlds biggest auction site and thats OK wth me

Sorry to say I did not see any ebay commercials. 

eBay is a household name and and its brand recognition is vast. Advertising does not help a dominant brand the way it helps an upstart.

I was watching Saturday Night Live re-runs over the weekend. In a sketch featuring Adam Driver, he gives away an autographed action figure and says "If I see this on eBay, I'll kill you". There is a reason the writers of that sketch did not say "Etsy", "Mercari" or "Bonanza".

That's a bit dramatic.  I think perhaps you are overestimate how much attention eBay pays to you.

Well Mercari are planning a IPO sometime this year so they need all the PR they can get.

Etsy's stock price is up over 300% in the past year and if they don't hype the company it's definitely a bubble waiting to burst.

eBay on the other has been on the slow rise since they sold off StubHub (a brilliant move) and the classifieds division is close to an all time high. That said eBay's stock although near an all time high has historically moved up and down very slowly. They have never played the pump and dump game like many other companies.

Half the ads on tv these days are completely directed at Wall Street.

I think it is a solid business decision not to advertise on TV during the Super Bowl.  It is so darn expensive to do that and there are better ways to spend millions of dollars in advertising than a single super bowl ad.

And your closing statement is incorrect as you did not violate ANY community policy by posting this.  Some just like to make you feel as if you did and others say stuff like that because they think it is funny.  Now they may move it to a different board as they may not deem it a selling board subject.

Haha!  I know the posts Ebay doesn't like get sent to outer space.  Not much fun to try and post something here anymore.  And do not, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, mention the words, 'managed payments'.  Those posts are gone in the blink of an eye.

But on your topic, Ebay does not want to spend any money on advertising.  I don't get it.  Seems like they would get the benefit of more money coming in as the Dealers would.  It's rare to see an Ebay commercial. 

I have been here 20 years, and IMO Ebay has gotten worse and worse for most all of their business practices.  Just crazy.

They're not 'gone in the blink of an eye', they get sent to the Payments forum with a very clear hyperlink.  However, other threads at times get sent to pretty obscure boards - I agree that it's meddlesome and annoying, but at least there are clear links.

eBay responds to the market - this "I've been here for 20 years...23 years...whatever years" almost inevitably leads to 'insights' that don't seem to reflect that etailing has gone through generations of change since then, and NOTHING is as it was '20 years ago.'  No, it's not that cool exclusive club it was, it's just a grind like everything else.

Nope, it cost 5.5 million for a 30 second ad this year. Just think how many ads  Bud use to have every year.  Smart move in my book. 

years ago you had to advertise to get your name out there but in this day of age you can actually kill your business by over advertising especially in old outdated ways like phone books and overpriced tv slots.  

As someone else mentioned above it is a waste of money advertising if everybody already knows about you.  you go to any tavern and almost every body knows about ebay, yes some have good things to say while others have bad things to say but everybody knows about them.  Then you bring up mercari, etsy or whoever and only a select few will have heard of them, so the need to get their name out there like ebay use to. 

how much does Costco spend on advertising?  ZERO, they might have sales fliers going to members but to spend money on advertisement to the general public and they are a major competition to other b/m stores.  why? because they can undercut other stores that  spend money on advertising.
