I have a basic question about measuring.
Just had a buyer ask me for pit to pit measurement of a top . I replied that it was 36 inches which was in the description as bust measurement. She wrote back and said 36 is the bust measurement but I want the pit to pit measurement.
Just curious, have I been measuring bust the wrong way all these years I have been selling on ebay? I have always put pit to pit as the bust measurement.

Bust is double the "pit to pit" measurement. "Pit to pit" is the top laid flat and measuring across from one armpit seam to the other. Sellers measure both ways- there's no right or wrong- but you need to make it clear in the listing which way you're measuring so the buyer understands where the measurement is coming from.
A pet peeve of mine is when sellers provide "length" without telling you where they measured from. Some measure from the center back collar, some measure from the middle of the shoulder, some measure from the seam where shoulder and arm meet...

@packman60 Yep... you have.
I thought so, but googled it to make sure. The bust measurement is approximately 2-3" below the armpit.
That makes sense... that is how they are arranged on the body.

I have always done pit to pit and doubled that as bust measurement and never thought anything of it until she questioned it.
I do have a bad habit of giving length and not putting where I measured it from.
My pet peeve is no measurements at all in listings lol.
Well I guess I will be more careful with my bust measurements from now on.
Thanks

Pit to pit is the chest measurement commonly used in mens clothing. Bust measurement is slightly different and is more a measurement of the person than of the garment.

You’d think, right? And still I sometimes get a buyer saying something like “whoa your XL chest is so tiny it’s half of what my XL shirt is.”
@packman60 from this conversation so far I’m sure you have found out in this day and age, there’s no such thing as a “basic” question about clothing measurements.
