You know when you get a return delivered back to you but ebay doesn't update anything that you received the item back... this happens most of the time when buyers buy their own postage. There's other things that cause this too.
Anyway, whenever that happens and the return status is "buyer shipped", there are two options for sellers... "Mark as received" or "refund the buyer". Up until now I just always clicked to refund the buyer because I figure if I mark as received, I still have to click to refund the buyer afterwards. Why create more work for myself?
Is there any reason why ebay even gives you the option to mark as received?

I suppose if the buyer failed to buy or upload the tracking (and didn't use the eBay return label, if one was provided), it would be up to you to Do The Right Thing™ and mark it as Received when it comes back.
Incidentally, over in my buying account, I had to return an item last month, and although the tracking worked normally and showed it as Delivered back at the seller's place within a few days, the eBay tracking history for it showed it as still In Transit for two full days after the USPS showed it as Delivered. Finally it got itself updated properly, and I received my refund shortly after that.

Howdy Bigdeals! Well, I learned a lesson the hard way, on one return I had, the SECOND that tracking showed it was delivered (and way before I could get to the post office and pick it up) the buyer phoned CS and had them close out the case, and I got a defect for "case closed without seller resolution"!! This was before I knew I could have that disputed / removed, and I never knew why I wasn't allowed my 2 days to examine the item prior to refunding. Long story short, I NOW track all returns quit religiously so I can pick it up pronto, and if Ebay tracking isn't updated I use the USPS site for extra knowledge!
