I have sold over 40 items the past three months and not once have buyers or potential buyers been able to magnify my items - what am I missing and/or doing wrong?

That enlargement feature is known as "Gallery plus". It is a listing upgrade with a fee of 35 cents, except that it's free in a few categories (Collectibles, Art, Pottery & Glass, and Antiques). In those categories eBay activates the option automatically. If you want to use the Gallery Plus feature in the non-free categories, you have to specifically check it off when you set up your listing. And as noted in the other posts, it only works if the image meets a minimum size requirement.

I couldn’t care less if buyers magnified my items or not... just buy them.

The feature is something the seller pays for as an upgrade in most instances I think, - and, it depends on the pixel size of the uploaded picture. No one has ever told me they could not zoom my pics, but I don't pay the fee - so I really am unsure.
@shipscript is the one I recommend as a resident expert to explain this process to you. What the requirements are and if it can be done fee free. Maybe she will stop by to assist if she has the time. 🙂 Or maybe someone else has the knowledge who can be of more assistance than I.
I wish you well.

You have cropped the images too much to be able to zoom in.

If you are talking about the ability to enlarge your pics. When you post them to your listing, each pic must be a minimum of 800 pixels in one direction whether it is width or height doesn't matter. Just a direction has to be a minimum of 800 pixels.

Are you creating the listings on eBay or on a 3rd party lister?
That doesn't matter. The pics have to be a minimum of 800 pixel in one direction for the enlarge option to work on Ebay.

.............general reply.......................
the enlargement feature is free,it works fine, you can go to my pictures and check them.you do not even have to click on the picture, just hover over it.ebay has never enforced the minimum picture size, there are plenty of pictures on ebay that are too small,if you want a bigger picture then post one

I just had a look at your pictures and they are working as intended, the 1891 coin is working, look at the 3rd picture,it blows up just fine by hovering over it
the 1st 2 pictures of the coin are the minimum size recomended, they are 500 pixels square.the 3rd is larger so it is working just fine
