Listing Issues or Rolling Blackout?

I've recently noticed that my newly listed items aren't receiving any views.  I initially thought this was an eBay glitch associated with the August 2018 site changes and upgrades.  I'm in the Direct from Artist 'art paintings' selling category, so sales in general aren't consistent.  I have noticed that I may go 2 weeks without any activity and suddenly I make 5 organic sales in a weekend.  I've always found this to be odd but assumed it was related to pay-day cycles.  However, normally within the first hour of listing a new painting, I'd have at least 15 or so views regardless of it being a BIN or an auction-style listing.  The art I do is relatively popular and I typically receive a consistent number of hits and/or watchers on my items.

Over the past two weeks, any new item i've listed sits with less than 10 views (probably my own) and many with zero.  I got curious and tried a keyword search for my items as well as a basic category search.  Newly listed items should appear, right?  Newly listed auctions should appear, right?  Items with watchers should appear, right?  I am no where to be found with the exception of 1 listing which appears in the first page of results.  A month ago, I was on the first couple pages of search results with my items showing repeatedly.

I never knew there was a "conspiracy" behind this until I became fed up, defeated and decided to research it today.  I've learned this phenomenon is better identified as the eBay rolling blackout.  My question for other sellers is, how long do these "black out" periods last?  Also, is anyone else currently experiencing this issue as well and do you believe it may be related to the holiday weekend?  Is anyone aware of whether or not there is a site-wide technical issue with new listings not indexing correctly?

I decided today, out of a moment of despair, to place several items on a "promoted listing" upgrade.  Did that help?  No... I still can't find my listings - naturally - within the search results.  Please, someone that knows more about this, give me some advice or insight as to what is going on.

Re: Listing Issues or Rolling Blackout?

Definitely relate to your strategy, putting effort into here is a waste when sell thru rate is higher elsewhere..and not near the expense or complete exposure to risk. It’s annoying because I sold over 5000 transactions in a year, to just have all the work = no established business.. so off to create more listings elsewhere..unfortunately no import feature

Hi, so sorry to hear of your plight. I can tell you one thing about searching for new listings. The eBay User Agreement does say that it might take 24 hours for a new listing to index. If you are listing, then immediately searching, it is possible you might not find your listings initially. (And to add to this, there is a theory, that if you are revising or tweaking your new listings within that first 24 hours, you might be sending that listing back into the queue for another 24 hours possibly.)

There is also information in the UA that states some listings might not show up in Search regardless of keywords used. Ebay reserves the right to not show all listings all the time. I don’t know if that can adequately explain your situation. If i were going to guess at the fall off of your sales, i would lean toward the summer sales slump that some experience. Then find their sales increase steadily as we approach the holiday gift-giving season.

i don’t have much experience selling artwork. However, eBay is a brand-centric platform. Well known luxury brands do quite well here, for example. Unless your artwork is well known, i could see where keywords one uses to describe original art might be too general or broad to bring significant traffic. That brand name is missing that would otherwise direct new eyes to your listings.

The only other phenomena i’ve seen on the platform that might be pertinent to some posters in this thread is the “new seller bump” in Search. I’ve heard of new sellers who do quite well initially for a few months, and then sales tank. It is suggested that eBay bumps new sellers up in Searches to help get them established and then they drift farther down the list as time goes on and sales fall off. I have no hard evidence, just anecdotal reports from being on the boards. But it is certainly possible.

Re: Listing Issues or Rolling Blackout?

They do jerk us around.  Last time I spoke to an ebay rep located in Qatar, he knew I was on to their tricks and he instantly "fixed" the one account I was complaining about.

Trying to tell me account is being hacked, but only when I am trying to bulk change the shipping.  Also, a 6-8 hour delay before listings are posted.  Gotta constantly view each accounts listings on different computers/accounts to monitor when they go live.

Re: Listing Issues or Rolling Blackout?

Yes, it is not by accident. Once again I am watching 30+ items roll off tonight with 4 views each (everyone of them my own views). Other store is doing the same. Items rolling off unsold with no views other than my own.

It's crystal clear to me that I am not longer relevant to eBay and they are freezing me out. I spoke at length with them on the phone numerous times. They admit my stores are compromised. They claim to not know why. Supposedly my eBay store accounts and ID's were sent to technical to see what is wrong.

That was several weeks ago. It's still the royal mess it has been. List and they sit dead in the water. I am watching auctions roll off right now with starting bids of .99-$2.00 on items they usually fight over. No bids, no views, no watchers, it is 100% on eBay as they told me my listings were good, my photos were good, my prices, all was excellent. They even have this account as a power seller, they opened me up to Alaska, Puerto Rico, etc., as soon as I hit Top Rated Plus and gee, shipments were hitting late to Alaska even though they were sent out a day earlier than my time frame. SO they yanked my Top rated. Told me I needed to sell a bunch of stuff fast to get the numbers back.

So I put a ton of items up. Nothing sold. Put them down to below wholesale and sold some items, not enough to change things around. It's like eBay knows I am trying to regain top seller with the wholesale prices, so once again my items died out, no new views. How does this benefit a buyer who would have LOVED to find the killer deals I had running? It doesn't. Screws over buyer and seller.

Such a con. The entire thing. I did auctions this last time with their free promotion as they seem to be getting more exposure right now than BIN and make some sales. Not this time, all rolling off no bids, no views, no watchers. New items. Items that used to sell well. Items that are selling well elsewhere.

It's not me, it's not you. It's eBay. And I no longer care. After fighting this losing battle for months, I am moving my main stores elsewhere where they do treat me like I am a valuable part of their business. Where I do sell my items. To people who like them and leave great feedback and buy more.

eBay is now my overflow, as of today. Tired of the constant games here, the glitches, the customer service reps who talk out of both sides of their mouths and seem to have NO CLUE what is going on with the very company they work for.

Sad thing is, I know this is what eBay wants. To move smaller sellers like me off the platform by the 10's of thousands to free up room for their big sellers and overseas sellers who bring them their main money.

Even sadder, I did everything here eBay asked of me and more. It just wasn't good enough for this site to keep me alive. Each month I tell myself it has to get better. It doesn't. It isn't summer either as I am selling fine elsewhere. It's EBAY. I cannot figure out how to get seen and sell and they have zero intention of ever telling me if that is even possible. Why? I am nothing to them. Just one of a million ants they want out of their new house.

Don't spray me with bug spray eBay, enough damage has already been done to my bank account, my peace of mind and my security. A little part of my soul has been taken as I chased this out of control train to the end of the line trying to stop it and get back on again. It threw me back off.

The train has gone off the rails for so many sellers, and I see no resolution in sight. I don't think there is one for small sellers in certain arenas, it's over.

What blows my mind is they keep sending free promos to put up auctions when they no longer want them.

When they push us to resist items that didn't sell, with the lower the price by $1 attached, like they even have a clue anymore themselves.

Sending more and more freebies to the very sellers they wish would get off the platform. Why don't they starve us out with no promotions?

I wouldn't have bothered to list anything last week except they threw me a 100 free listings in each of my stores. I wasted a lot of time listing things that once again, are dead in the water with no views, no action, nothing. I should have spent that time listing elsewhere where the items sell. From today on, eBay is my last place to list. It has finally broken me down. I cried last night watching big sale Sunday be a big DUD for me.

I won't let the door hit me in the %&^% on the way out, you've done that to me over and over again eBay with your inane phone reps and constant lies, nondisclosures and lack of search engine exposure. I don't need a sore &^*^% too!

OH- AND BTW, my stores keep resetting back to ZERO views, I thought that was fixed? I can't even stay on Classic view, they switch me back to the new one, I hate it, I switch back. They ask me to tell them why I switched back to classic. I've filled that idiotic form out 20 times, and they switch me right back to their new pages in one page change.

Seriously? If you want us on these new pages, stop letting us switch back to classic when you refuse to keep us in classic? You are wasting so much of my time, it is starting to feel intentional. Maybe it is, eBay is making me paranoid, geez.

Off to list on another site that LIKES ME and LOVES my items. Sad, as I loved eBay, it was home. Guess they want me to move out. OK. I'm going. I'll stop by to use your freebies and do my laundry though.

Views have NEVER been correct or consistent. Don't worry about views as it will just drive you nuts.

Re: Listing Issues or Rolling Blackout?

When I buy Doll House miniature paintings/ furniture, tiny rugs or whatever i usually search OOAK and Artist Signed

It cuts out all the mass produced stuff if I type in ' one of a kind' or OOAK

Re: Listing Issues or Rolling Blackout?

It's NOT rolling blackout, NO, Ebay is not keeping me from seeing your paintings. It's your listing issues. Start with your titles and go from there.

Re: Listing Issues or Rolling Blackout?

I received feedback from a buyer on FB that the search here is off and takes them to listing that are not relevant..and sellers using disingenuous keywords..hence they do not shop on ebay. It’s definitely not going to get better, it has been a progressive decline, other than using the listing I have, then downgrading, my exit strategy timeline has shortened because one day listing elsewhere resulted in a 12% sell thru rate in the same day..this place is a dinosaur..

Re: Listing Issues or Rolling Blackout?

Try keeping your listing as good til canceled and simply adding your stock to that listing. This way you gain better SEO ranking from Google and others as well as eBat itself. My listing tends to only start producing results after a couple of months or so, with the odd exception.

If you want to sell on eBay you need to read up on how to please the Cassini algorithm.

Re: Listing Issues or Rolling Blackout?

There's no conspiracy.

Everyone that has been selling and listing everyday for years knows there are brownouts here on ebay and they get especially bad during updates.

It's clockwork.

No views does not mean your listing is not being seen.

Sometimes it simply means that no one is interested enough to click into it.

Re: Listing Issues or Rolling Blackout?

When you list 10-20 things a day every day and you notice that for 3 days straight not even an ebay bot has come around to view your listings.....that's a brownout.

Re: Listing Issues or Rolling Blackout?

There are about as many reasons why items don't sell as there are items on eBay.  Not sure what the OP's problem is but I don't deny that there is one (or more).

As for me I have never been unable to find my own items, but sometimes it feels like not everyone else can find them.  Just today it seems eBay was only showing my items to people named Sergey, as two Sergeys were my only buyers over a span of a few hours.  Now what is the chance of that happening by chance?  Proof of throttling, I say.  I say, a Sergey gateway no way fair play, hey?

If you're upset by that last paragraph, lighten up.  But there were two Sergeys.
