Did you mean:

Liability, refunds?

I'm not entirely sure how to put this.

Hi. I'm a seller and I've only started to realize what an amateur I really am at this. I sold someone a Motorola Moto Prepaid phone with the SIM card removed so they could reactivate it with a new card, but I'm in a complicated spot.

They want to use this phone internationally and did not previously inform me about this beforehand. As such, they are trying to refund the phone as Verizon is apparently retiring the Moto as they are switching to 5G services. Something along those lines.

Normally I would be happy to give them a refund and let things be, but I feel conflicted about this situation. I just barely have enough money in my Paypal to cover my current eBay fees, and I am very, very broke in my actual bank account as well. I will be spending what's left of my money on an upcoming power bill that if not paid will leave me in an even more precarious situation than this.

I ask you, how liable am I for refunding the full amount if the buyer wanted to use the phone internationally when I sold the phone from within the United States?

Please give me a brutally honest answer, I want to know if I'm overthinking this and I should just go through with trying to process the refund as normal.

As requested, brutally honest answer:

1. Buyer can pick any reason they want, true or not, and create a SNAD claim forcing you to pay the return shipment regardless of an "No returns" policies

2. Buyer may be angling for a partial or full refund and may have known ahead of time the international limitations of that particular device.  Mobile phones by the way are on of THE highest scammed items on the venue ...

3. The liability you have is that you are at the Buyer's mercy as far as wheat they want to do, eBay in most cases will side with Buyers on disputes, calling Home Office would simply hasten them siding in the Buyer's favor regardless of the lip service they give you on the phone

4. Your financial situation:  neither the Buyer nor eBay cares about what your financial situation is, they both expect you to conduct your business like any Retailer ... Sell, Ship, Accept Returns if necessary.  So no matter how you do it, if you wind up issuing a full refund PLUS pay return shipping you need to find a way to put $$ back in your PayPal account via a transfer from your Bank account.  You can probably use a credit card as a funding source but at the end of the day you will owe the money.  One positive, if you do the return and refund eBay will credit the Final Value Fees back to your account.

5. If you plan to sell more in the future on eBay you need to make $$ available to cover the occasional bump in the rod.

Now, in closing, don't stop selling on eBay just because of one bad transaction, you should consider continuing to Sell until you recover what if any loss you incurred on the phone deal ... once you are profitable then you can decide what you want to do moving forward.  Now, to be honest, I am sorry this happened to you and hope that it can be worked out to minimize your loss ...
