Label printed message - scam?

Looking for advice...I made a sale Tuesday evening around 7pm. When I got up the next morning, there was a message on eBay that the shipping label had been printed - while I was sleeping! I live with adults only, no kids and no one has access to my account. There was no label on the printer.

I was preparing to ship the item today so went ahead and voided the alleged label and printed a new one. As I was doing that I noticed that the imaginary label was for ground shipping. The customer had specified Priority Mail. None of this made sense to me so I looked at the buyer info. Apparently they joined eBay the same day as they purchased my item. Does this sound like a scam, or like I've been hacked?

The item was a set of children's books for $50, Shipping $36, Tax $5 = $91 approximately.

Smells like a scam!

You, the seller purchase and print shipping labels and confirm the shipping service you wish to use.

I know that some buyers try to select a higher shipping service even when I selected the shipping service when listing. I have never understood that because I don't see an increase in fees for the buyer to select such an option.

Do a quick Google map of address and see what it looks like just for curiosity.

you did confuse me a little on this comment:  As I was doing that I noticed that the imaginary label was for ground shipping. The customer had specified Priority Mail.???

Shipping books should fall under ground or media mail. You have to decide.

Re: Label printed message - scam?

Who paid for the ghost label?      The OP or the scammer?

How does a scam work if the buyer somehow finagles it to downgrade

his shipping from Priority to ground?

Re: Label printed message - scam?

Just read the O.P. post a couple more times and also read my response of: you did confuse me a little on this comment:  As I was doing that, I noticed that the imaginary label was for ground shipping. The customer had specified Priority Mail.???

Scammers are always finding new ways to steal & cheat.

The O.P. states the buyer is a new member: Apparently they joined eBay the same day as they purchased my item. Does this sound like a scam, or like I've been hacked?

I guess we need to ask the O.P. what shipping service they selected when they listed.

Send the O.P. some questions. I can only go by what they stated and how I interpreted their post.

Re: Label printed message - scam?

Yes, I gave the option of Media Mail or Priority Mail and the customer had specified Priority Mail when they paid. The ghost label was identified in "Manage Shipping Labels" as Media Mail. Some people want things quickly, so I always give the choice of PM, even if it is books.

Re: Label printed message - scam?

I listed two shipping options, Media and PM. When payment was made, it was indicated on one page that they buyer had paid for their choice of PM, however, on the "manage shipping labels" page, it states that the label printed (it was NOT printed) was for media mail. The ghost label that I did not initiate.

Re: Label printed message - scam?

when I list items, I don't see an option for me or the buyer to select shipping options. I enter weight & dims and I select the shipping service I offer in the listing.

If the buyer tries to change shipping service at checkout to a higher rate which I have experienced, I do not see a price increase at my end to cover that cost when I go to order details and when I go to purchase a shipping label. I will change the shipping service back to what I selected when I listed the item.

This might be something eBay needs to look into. You cannot receive a shipping label to print when you did not purchase one.
