Just realized why all these categories have been dumped

I sell dolls and as I'm browsing along, I realize there is no "Other Brand & Character Dolls" category anymore, just "Dolls and Bears". ALL the dolls and bears. So, what used to be 60,000 other listings I had to compete with has turned into 485,000 listings overnight. How can this make sense? How will buyers find what they're looking for? How can I possibly compete with all these other sellers now?

Oh, wait, I know. I can just start a Promoted Listings Advanced campaign and pay eBay to put my items at the top of the search results! No big deal, I'll only go out of business in a week or so.

I normally try to stay on the positive side of things, but there is zero reasoning or justification behind making things more difficult for buyers to find (right as we enter the holidays). Other than attempting to force us into PLA  💸

Just. . .wow.

Re: Just realized why all these categories have been dumped

Hey @popblox! We're definitely not pushing or requiring sellers to use promoted listings standard or advanced. We're just in the process of adjusting categories from concept-based categories to more dynamic product-based categories (we announced this last month here if you'd like to read more about it).

The end-goal is actually less disruptions like this, and as we shift towards utilizing Item Specifics more and unique subcategories less, we're confident in that outcome.

Things may look a little off while the move is in process, but rest assured, we expect everything to be back to running as you'd expect within a few days. Thanks for your patience!

Velvet,
eBay

Re: Just realized why all these categories have been dumped

eBay has done similar to other categories that we sell in.

Since then, sales have been under-average and, seemingly, getting worse.

Re: Just realized why all these categories have been dumped

Thanks for the response velvet@ebay, but nowhere in that announcement (or any others I've seen) does it mention changes to the Dolls & Bears category.

When you say, "things may look a little off", are you referring to the specific categories in which the changes are to take place, or just all eBay categories in general may look a little off? If it's the latter, are we to presume unannounced categories will return to their previous state in a month when the transition is complete?

Did you check the linked document previewing the Category Changes in the 2021 Fall Seller Update? There's a huge section on dolls in the linked document. Since I don't sell dolls, I'm not sure it's what you'd be looking for . . .

Thank you @eleanor*rigby, despite the fact that it wasn't listed as a category change in the original announcement (Collectibles & Art, Jewelry, Musical Instruments, Parts & Accessories, Sporting Goods), I see it now in the fine print. Great. I stand by my original statement.

With antiques and art works, including vintage postcards, you might just  item-specific these to death.  Who actually searches for all those specifics? How stupid!

Because whomever is making these changes is stupid.

Re: Just realized why all these categories have been dumped

Because whomever is making these changes is stupid.  After a couple of charges I had not permitted, I just  went through and deselected "Gallery Plus."  I also dumped my store and opened one on

Hip postcards. I'll keep listings on ebay, and if it becomes safe again to have Gallery Plus free of charge,

I will change it back. Over the years, I have learned never to put all my eggs in the eBay basket, because

there is no telling what they will do next.

Re: Just realized why all these categories have been dumped

Yup, you may be on to something there.   They can keep their new advanced promotions campaigns, it's just another way to syphon more money out of the sellers sales.  I couldn't care less about that anyway when I search for things because I always search by newly listed or lowest price first, so best match I could not care less about.  People will find your items without paying eBay to put them at the top of the heap.

The promotions thing to me is kinda a joke anyway.  Like sometimes I list something and put a 3% promotion rate when it's suggesting maybe 9% (and I think that's all a scam too, they can suggest anything they want, ain't gonna work on me) and like a day later only 4 people have looked at it.  So just for my own info, I'll up the promotion rate to 9%, the suggested rate and wait a few days to see if it does get me any more views.  Yeah right, like 3 days later, I'm up to a whopping 9 views.  Then I just lower it again.  Which now that I just said that, I don't know why I even bother with 3% or promoting it at all lol

I think they took away some of the collectibles categories (for like animation cartoon character by franchise)... and now try to suggest you put those things in the toys and hobbies category (like my little pony, smurfs, etc) because the collectibles category has free gallery images, and the toy and hobbies category is $1 to check off that box.  Sorry, but I'll just do without, I'm never paying that $1 fee.  Maybe if you sell expensive items it might be worth it, but I sell cheap stuff here because it's way too risky for me to list an expensive item and have eBay allow some loser to scam me.

And, what is (was) a concept based category? And, what advantage does a product based category have over concept based? Pros and Cons please.
