Just a warning....Paypal scam email

I just got this email that is supposedly is from paypal with this heading and my name on it....

Important ? We noticed unusual activity in your PayPal account (PP 735-xxx-xxx)

And it has nothing but links to click to display the message, obvious scam.

I did not click on anything and went directly to the pal from my ebay link and of course nothing is wrong.

But just in case some newbie lurkers don't know about it, heads up.  Never click on any links about your accounts - go directly to the account itself.

Re: Just a warning....Paypal scam email

It is a scam so old it boggles my mind that folks still fall for it but it is worth bringing up from time to time.  Thanks!

Re: Just a warning....Paypal scam email

Yep, got it, too.  Shows an eBay email address.

I did send it to PP, and they responded that they could not tell if it was a spoof or not because it wasn't from them.  Didn't bother sending it to eBay. Last time I sent a spoof notice, I didn't even get a canned response.  Dont' waste my time with this...they do enough of it with other things.

What is so awful, is that any eBay seller not paying attention could just have easily clicked the links. Thanks for posting. (I have gotten them myself)

Re: Just a warning....Paypal scam email

Since neither eBay nor PayPal seem to be doing anything at all about these phishing emails (no surprise there) ... I report them directly to the OpenDNS Phishtank .

====================

What is PhishTank?
PhishTank is a collaborative clearing house for data and information about phishing on the Internet. Also, PhishTank provides an open API for developers and researchers to integrate anti-phishing data into their applications at no charge.

====================

Many times after reporting a phishing email such as the OP posted, I've seen the web sites completely shut down by the domain host. No Website means No Way for the phishing scammer to collect login data from people fooled by the scam.

Seriously?  This is what they're saying now?  Of course it's a spoof if it didn't come from paypal.

Re: Just a warning....Paypal scam email

I love it when I get that e-mail from "Bob jonhson, Paypal accounts manger" (no kidding, really just like that) telling me that my funds will be released to me as soon as I can show that I have shipped.  Nope.  I dont ship until I see money in my Paypal account.

When I used to report phishing emails to PayPal, I'd get duplicate emails from their spoof thanking me and telling me they were looking into it. No more PayPal Spoof workers I guess.

Yup, that is what they are saying now.  Talk about protecting your users by doing something to shut them down.  But they did send me a tutorial about how to spot a phishing email.  Duh, if i didn't know how, I wouldn't have sent a copy of it to you.

Unfortunately, we're unable to determine if this email is considered

phishing because the email did not claim to come from PayPal.

It did claim to be from the pal.  They just can't be bothered.

Brilliant ... they should know from how the message is structured if it from them or not ... or perhaps know that is or is not how they contact members with account issues ...

Paypal is saying they know it isn't from them but can't tell if it's a spoof paypal email.

Just pure laziness on their part.

There are tools online to determine where an email actually originates from.

Trace an email with its full headers

Re: Just a warning....Paypal scam email

Yes, it is a scam as old as the hills, but what Rose is trying to point out is it has her actal name on it.

In the past when I received them it was always addressed to emerald 40 or dear customer or some other generic salutation.  But it did not include my actual name, which I assume they did not have access to.

Exactly like it is on the account, not the business name that is on the address.

Since I tried to link my new card to register for the cashback a few days ago and failed because the pal doesn't like seeing the card number the way it is on the card, but as one continuous string of numbers, I figured that the pal might be contacting me because of that.

But the useless question mark and the click on these links to find out why we are contacting you just screamed scam to me.

These hackers are getting smarter than ever, which is what they are. This is very serious.
