Item location different from described

It bothers me that a location can say Beverly Hills, CA but the item is shipped from Minnesota.  Isn't that a misrepresentation, i.e. LIE.  If it were in CA, I would receive it sooner, I would think.  Why does EBAY allow this to occur ?

It's probably a dropshipper.  I have no idea why eBay allows it.

Happy 2018! May this upcoming year be a prosperous one!

pammieann25,

My best guess as to why it appears that eBay "allows" this is that, to the best of my knowledge, eBay does not have a mechanism in place to track instances of location misrepresentation.  Do you know of any mechanism by which you can report location misrepresentation to eBay?  I am not aware of one.

If eBay doesn't track instances of location misrepresentation, then eBay won't do anything about this "problem".  As far as I am concerned, eBay is only concerned with grabbing a share of YOUR money that you spend on the site and does NOT care from which seller you buy from as long as it is on eBay.

There is a "report item" link on every listing. You can report the listing using that link and if you buy the item you can also call customer service but I don't know if ebay willa ctually enforce the policy since the item was still shipping within the US. Its a different story when its listed as being in 1 country but ships from another...

missjen316,

I tested the Report link using an eBay listing.

These are the steps:

Report Category: < Select Listing Practices >

Reason for Report: < Select Other listing practices >

Detailed Reason: < Select Item location misrepresentation >

If you click the continue button, a rectangular box will appear in which you can state a Brief Description (up to 100 characters) and you will need to enter a 6 digit numerical verification code before submitting the report.

So, eBay does have a reporting mechanism for Item location misrepresentation.

@pammieann25

Now, if you have not already done so, please go and report the listing that caused you to start this thread (and see if eBay does ANYTHING) with your report.

Re: Item location different from described

Occasionally I think these instances are also a member selling something for "their sister," who lives in some other state and will ship the item, etc.  I actually wouldn't mind that as long as the sister get the item to me in good condition.

I don't know how it looks when the selling member is using a dropshipper to send out their sales.  I don't buy much NEW product here.

Re: Item location different from described

eBay is probably most concerned with items that are shipping from China, or another country, but are being falsely listed as US.

If something is shipping by USPS (not a local pickup sale) then it doesn't matter as much if it ships from California or Minnesota, particularly for smaller items which are delivered in a few days. I understand that it could matter in some cases, but in most it would still be a quick delivery within the 48 contiguous states.

Note that many sellers use fulfillment centers. It means their products are stored in a warehouse somewhere and when an order is placed, the center ships it out. Many Amazon sellers use Amazon fulfilment centers. Ebay also has such centers. All that matters is the product gets to you in the time frame promised.

Re: Item location different from described

Some sellers have their stock in more than one location (like me) and by the time a certain item sells, one location is out of stock, but another still has plenty in stock....Or a location closer to the buyer is chosen to ship it from.  The same item can be shipped from various locations and does offer advantages to the customer.

1) I doubt eBay has any mechanism in place to enforce this.

2) As a reader of this board for a decade, I can count on three fingers the number of people who have posted about having an issue about location misrepresentation within the United States.

3) If the seller ships within his handling time and it arrives within the estimated delivery time, IMHO what you 'think" about how fast it would have arrived does not matter in the least.

Re: Item location different from described

Yes, this happened to me. Seller listed as local in Phoenix, AZ, but item shipped from Oklahoma, to Kentucky, to Tucson. But, seller's store shows that he is located in Israel.

You can open a dispute in resolution center, use the Other option for reason, then select item isn't as described. The item location is one of the listing details that has to be correct.

Further details will allow you to indicate item was listed as in XYZ but was shipped from ABC.  If the item arrives later than indicated on the listing, according to eBay, you do NOT to have return it to receive the refund.

No they don't.

Wrong. That only applies to a seller saying that the item is in the USA, ships from china, and wants the buyer to return the item to china.

Re: Item location different from described

Is dropshipping not allowed on Ebay?  I don't know the answer... just wondering.  That's one reason why it would come from another location.  And I would think that the mailing timeline doesn't matter... as they state their "handling time" in the shipping info, and if they don't meet that criteria, you can ding them in feedback.  Timeline should still be the same.  Yes, it would probably get to you quicker from Cali if you're in Cali... but if they say it's a 3 day handling time anyway, it doesn't matter.
