Item Arrived Damaged

I shipped a figurine of an Afghan Hound and the buyer stated it arrived with a broken tail (afghan hound tails are fragile on these figurines). The buyer stated the package was in perfect condition. I wrapped the tail in bubble wrap and then it was carefully placed in a box with peanuts (the way it was originally shipped to me. That box was then placed inside another box, padded with paper, bubble wrap, etc. to insure it would arrive undamaged. I took extra precaution with the packaging, knowing it was so fragile. What is the typical procedure for making this right for the buyer? It's a loss of $208.00.

While I know it is possible for this to happen, I went above and beyond to take precautions and I'm not sure what the right resolution is in this situation, since I am relatively new at selling.

I was thinking it may have gotten broken while unwrapping it also.
I didn't purchase extra insurance and doubt USPS will pay anyway since the package was not damaged.

When the dust has settled, let us know how it was resolved.

Looking at the figurine, that tail would be very hard to package to prevent breakage.  Even double boxing probably wasn't enough.

If the buyer has not filed a case, that's not an automatic scam.  Maybe it's a buyer who actually believes in notifying the seller before jumping to a report or claim.

I think you are correct. I open cases as a less resort. The other day I bought something that arrived with holes in it and I notified the seller, I didn't instantly open a case, and I am far from a scammer wanting a partial refund. I don't do partial refunds because that isn't going to fix my item. I always contact the seller first and see what they have to say.

She filed for a return and full refund. 😞
Lost the undamaged item I sent and the full cost she bought it for.
Heartbreaking, as it once had great sentimental value...

sorry this happened to you.

Others may disagree but I recommend ship insure. They have paid up on a few of my sales fast and hassle free. I only use it on breakables that are expensive or if my gut says insure.

Check the buyers feedback left for others.   Ask the buyer for a pic of the damage, and if they can't for some reason, tell them to return the item for a refund.  Calling their bluff sometimes makes them give up and go away.  If the item is really broke,  OR if the buyer files a case you will lose the money and the item so you might as well try to salvage something out of it and get the item back.

I've come across a few sites where you can't even SUBMIT a claim unless you upload a picture. It'd be nice if eBay could do the same.

How would insurance have helped in this situation?

I ALWAYS tell them I will refund upon return.  90% of the time, they dont come back so no refund. Eventually they catch on that I am not just gonna dash off a refund AND let them keep the item too.

I purchased a birthday watch on June 11, 2017--wrapped and given for birthday Sept 20, 2017 (see attached Dr License birth date).

The present (watch) opened Sept 20, 2017--non-working watch and entire bottom wristband has completely separated. My husband sent seller photo of damage.

October 18, 2017 seller emails "Sorry for my late response..." advises to go fix the watch he will offer $25.

Please advise.  I have never had a bad transaction with eBay.

Regarding your broken watch, you will get more helpful answers if you start your own topic instead of tagging on to this one about a broken statue.  Many people just read the opening post and reply to that.

Regarding your watch, you have missed the 30-day deadline for filing a “not as described” claim with eBay.  You should have inspected the watch when you first received it.  I am assuming you would not post here if you dropped the watch and broke it and that the seller truly sent you a defective product.

Your first option is to file “not as described” with PayPal.  You have 180 days.   I don’t remember if that is from date of sale or date of delivery.  Almost 4 months has already past.  Do not accept an offer from the seller to send a replacement.  He/she may be trying to string you out past the 180 days.

Send the item back according to the PayPal instructions.  It MUST include tracking.  When the tracking notice says delivered, enter that into PayPal to receive your refund.  Return shipping will be at your expense.

Your alternative/backup is to file with your credit card company if you paid by credit card or backed your PayPal payment with your credit card.

Remember, in the future, inspect all packages ASAP.  Always pay by PayPal using your credit card.  Never allow them to take the money directly from your bank account.

Good Luck

Just because the buyer contacted you first without opening a claim DOES NOT mean they are automatically a scammer. Some posters here say that to everyone no matter the situation. Don't let those poster get you riled up. It's best to listen to other posters and take their advice on this matter.

Sorry but this really bothers me. You bought something and waited 3 months after buying it to inspect it? That's your fault and you should accept the loss. How long after September 20th did you wait to contact the seller?

In my opinion the seller is being extremely generous offering you ANY type of partial refund 4 months later.

This kind of irresponsibile behavior is what drives ebay sellers nuts.

To be fair to the OP of the watch - they very well may have looked at the watch to see if it was working before they wrapped it. I've bought things for gifts - wrapped them months a head of time and when opened find a part missing or something not working. I take it back and return the item - doesn't make me irresponsible.

I think right now is a good time to advise folks - particularly those who buy for the holidays - to open every package as soon as you get it and TRY IT OUT.  Dont take it from the mail package and stick in a gift package and stuff it in a closet for the next 3 months.  You only have a finite time to return things if they have problems.  Better to find the problem before giving as a gift, right?

Also remember that many items that DO work today, may not be by the holidays if the batteries die.  (OH so many watches with dead batteries as gifts...)

I have heard of more packages arrived damaged in the past few months than ever before. I can only advise to make insurance claim every time. That is the only way the post office will pay attention.
