I've heard that hiding a bidders identity can be used for keeping gifts a secret, or something like that. Wives or husbands that have crazy spending habits just don't seem to make this feature on eBay very legitimate in my viewpoint. I just can't see why people use the anonymous bidder feature. It seems like the perfect opportunity for the seller to SHILL the listing in my opinion. Maybe you have a better reason?

Back when eBay showed the bidders' actual Account ID in auctions that knowlge could abuses.
For example, there were members that followed IDs to see what they were bidding on. Some times knowldge of who won what was used to con sellers into changing shipping or to follow potential bidders to out bid them at the last second or ask the winning member to resell the item to someone else.
So eBay decided to hide member IDs in the masked formant of a***g.

I understand your statements regarding how usernames are shown on regular auctions. I was singling in on the " Keep Bidders Identities anonymous" option you can select as a seller". This makes it where nobody can see any part of your name or feedback score. I think it is a little suspicious at times...

Hi, where are you seeing this, because on the eBay.com site (USA), i am unaware of any such option. Ebay decided to hide bidders identities to protect the buyer’s privacy. Sellers do not have a choice in this, unless i am misunderstanding the question.

It takes less than 30 seconds to create a new eBay acount, and gmail makes the supply virtually unlimited.

Sellers cannot opt out of the basic way that eBay camouflages bidders' IDs, but they can add another level of privacy, which predates the camouflage policy. It's called a Private listing. Here's what the option looks like on the listing setup page.
