Thinking about getting a starter store. I could use the extra listing beyond the 50 free that I get every month. I also like the idea of having a legitimate store even though I'm more of a hobbyist at this point selling a few different types of items. It could be an educational experience having a store front that I can customize and learn from in case I decide I want to get serious about online selling down the line. I don't mind the added $5/month expense for those reasons, but I don't want to pay for a dumbed down version of a real ebay store front. So are they the same?

No they aren't the same
You get to use the Vacation setting which is great
You don't get the ebay shipping supply coupon or the small FVF discount with the Starter
Your max cap for FVF is 750.00 other stores 250.00
Terapeak Research is free with Basic & up stores $19.95 with starter
To good links to compare what different levels offer
https://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/run-your-store/subscriptions-and-fees.html#m22_tb_a2__2
And
https://www.ebay.com/sub/subscriptions
The fee for those extra 50 listings at .35 would be $17.50 so it may be a great idea for you if you need more then the 50

As far as I know the look and feel of the Stores are all the same.
The biggest difference between the Starter Store and the others is that the fvf rates for a Starter are the same as for non-Store sellers.

As long as the features on the page itself like setting categories, putting up a logo, having buyers be able to search the store are available in the starter store I'll be fine with that. The things on your list are nice but nothing I can't do without at this point although having the research would be great. That alone might be a reason to upgrade down the line. Thanks for the info!

Yes you can have all your categories , logo etc.
And should you decide down the road to you want upgrade to Basic they don't frown on that
Best of luck
