This is just my opinion but on your shorts listing: The pictures make me want to hit the back button.
Take a picture of them on a clean background w/o all the clutter, but don't take any pictures of anything lying on a floor.

You don't really have a choice here.
Ebay or Paypal will refund any SNAD if a buyer files against you and you don't do it yourself. And if they step in because you won't satisfy a buyer, that counts against you.
Ebay's MBG gives a buyer 30 days to file a claim against you. Paypal gives a buyer 180 days.
It stinks, but that's the way it is.
It's the cost of doing business here sadly.

I have always done returns. In my mind if my customer is not happy with the item, I am not going to force them to keep it. It also means that my returns are usually opened for the correct i.e. didn't fit, changed my mind, etc

I did. That just as bad.
You need to take clean, clear picture of just the shorts. You need to crop all the other stuff out of your photos. Those shorts look awful draped over a chair.
Do you have a black or white tablecloth you could use as a backdrop?
Take a look at my listings and see how the only thing in the picture is the item for sale. Almost all my pics are done using a tablecloth for a clean background.
I'll show you a cheap way to get a good backdrop. Let me find the pictures for you.

This is nothing but PVC piping. Cheap to buy, easy to assemble and easy to break down and store.
I pin a white or black tablecloth over it and can use this as a backdrop for almost anything I sell.
You can use clothes pins to attach a clothing item to the tablecloth.

Try spreading a fresh sheet on your bed, neatly lay shorts on sheet, stand on a chair & take photos from above.
OR get a hanger on which you can clip shorts- hang over top of a door & take photos.
Many of these hangers with clips come free when you buy pants/shorts at the store OR use a couple clothespins on a regular hanger.
Worse case; Buy a large 3M hook, hang it on a blank white wall, use to hold hangers with your item clipped to it.
These are very LOW cost methods, if you have no money to invest..
Also for a free editing program that is very good (for cropping resizing etc..) I use Paint.net
