Is it normal to get more Ebay views vs. external views?

It looks like I'm getting a lot of Ebay views (other sellers?) but nothing external.  How does one get someone to externally view?

100% normal.

What makes you think eBay views are just from from other sellers? eBay buyers outnumber eBay sellers 10 to 1.

Most external views come from search engines like Google, Bing, Duck Duck Go etc.

Looking at the last 30 days, our external views averaged around 8-15% of our total views.  Totally normal to have way more eBay views.

@liawri-75

I get more external views than eBay views. Most of my external views come from my Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube social posts. If you want more external views and you are not using social media, you can try sharing your listings using social media.

I am a very small seller, only selling Christmas ornaments, so you may get different results.

This week my views have been erratic.

Surges in impressions without similar increase in views. External views equal to Ebay views.

Usually an increase in external views leads to an increase in my sales. Not this week.

That is completely normal & it doesn't mean that "sellers" are looking at your items.  Most of your views are always going to be via eBay for most sellers.  They can be buyers, sellers or people who accidentally wound up on the page lol.

According to eBay statistics listed on my page, on average month after month about 45% or so of my listing views come from a Google search. The other 55% or so come from an eBay search.

You need to do some research on getting Google to recognize your listings. A Google search (surprise surprise) for Search Engine Optimization will give you a wealth of information as a starter. But as you get more and more into it you will find a multitude of tricks to get Google to list your items. (And while there are some pay to play programs I have never paid a promotion fee - not on eBay and not on Google)

Really  never focused on the views and watchers very much - focused on getting a  shopper to stop and spend their $$ on my listing vs  the other  guys at my "fixed" price with pronto ship/deliver service after payment.-

Sold  top shelve  mainly primarily used  stuff  - clothing men's/women's, footwear, western wear, boots/hats cameras, some  watches, wallets, hand bags and jewelry - stuff I was  familiar with

. 1.  The  first three thing  shopper sees in a listing are -

  • the title - make it brief  with  key info  - size, color, brand etc no  sales sizzle,
  • a clean close the picture of the item  - if possible show just a partial  pic of the item  - like  the upper 1/4th of a  shirt, coat - that shows the collar, brand tag, size buttons (I call  a show 'em a little leg pic) and followed by lots of details clean pics to show details and bums and bruises.  A clear  clean pic  is a reflection of the  seller and  so is the not  so cleand and clear.
  • Price - a separate shipping/handling fee - this way you will show  the lowest item price to the  shopper to stop and read more if they  are interested - your list is your only  sales person - make it work for you m

2. short and sweet bullet point written  description with all key dimensions - no ruler and item or  coin referencing for  sizing -  one  can't read the ruler scale in  a small pic

3.  Condition - under estimate the condition - every one loves to receive  a better than expected item  plus  I don't really know  what  the terns - very good, excellent  mean to every body - new I can under stand if it  has a price tag - never use "like new" - you can't prove it

4. Price - never did  free shipping - it will show  a higher price to the shopper and they  just may do a walk on by.  Always did research of what same or  similar items sold for and priced items at the mid point of the range.  To make a profit the  seller  needs to source items  at a cost that the  market will bear and provide a decent minimal profit or more if you can get it - don't believe in selling for next to nothing or  single digit prices.  Average Item selling  price of the 1665  items I ship

ed was  $46.5  smd a 45% gross profit on the items.  My once in a  blue moon  sale  bought  a Polaroid Land camera for 1 dollar at a yard sale - sold it for 1 buck+ $12+ shipping

5. Personally never shipped  any thing without  tracking and shipped via USPS priority mail via the least  expensive  service I could.  Familiar your  self with a all the carrier services and costs - they keep changing.  Sold  a few lighter than 16 oz items via Ground Advantage - had tracking and deliver time similar to Priority (3 days est).  Only once did I  ship an item in a box   larger than 1728 cu.in  - never heard of cubic pricing before as  back then it only applied to  a couple  postal  zone (in my case from GA to Cali - got a GomerGomer Pyle.jpg

PS: In a nutshell :  Guess it is nice  to know that your listings are getting views but  when I sold  something I liked to do this  mo betta' .  It is hard to tell what trips the trigger  of each and every buyer.. - In my selling career I  often asked the buyer why did I earn the privilege of receiving your order - of course I asked on after  the goods were  delivered and paid for...  My boss often asked why did you lose that order.happy dance.png

I'm no expert on social media, especially for advertising your eBay items, but I find that Instagram posts are good when you're trying to get them seen by people you're not friends with/aren't following you, especially if you use tags well (and extensively), but the big drawback that's a killer for sharing eBay items is that you can't share clickable links in Instagram posts (as far as I know).  Paid ads can have clickable links, but not just regular posts.

Facebook on the other hand does allow links, but you're less likely to get significant views from non-followers/friends.  You can set up a business profile attached to your existing account (so you don't have two logins), but that doesn't really change that except that then your Facebook friends will have to follow that business profile in order to see your posts regularly.  I don't recommend Facebook for this purpose.

I do think Pinterest is actually a decent option for eBay, but I don't know it as well so I could be wrong.  We actually have all our eBay listings auto-posted to Pinterest, but the automatic posts don't have tags, or any text writeup about the items, so the discoverability of those pins isn't great.  If you did it manually, you could probably get much better success.

I'm not familiar with the various other social media options for advertising purposes.

If you are interested in sharing your listings on social media sites, the first step is to create an account on each site.  Since you already use Facebook for friends, you will probably want to create a Facebook business page to avoid annoying your friends (this is what I did).

Once you have created your accounts, make sure you stay signed into them and navigate to the Social page (under the Marketing tab in Seller Hub) https://www.ebay.com/sh/social where you can link all of your social accounts and start sharing directly from eBay.  Or, you can always create your posts directly on the social media site.

Facebook and Pinterest shares (posts) allow clickable links to your listings. Instagram and YouTube allow adding links to your shares (posts); however, they are not clickable. The viewer has to copy and paste the link in their browser to visit your listing. I have a clickable link to my store on both Instagram and YouTube, though, so that helps drive traffic to my store. If you share through eBay's Social page, the links to the listing are inserted automatically. You can use an AI-generated description or write your own.

I get the most views from YouTube, followed by Instagram.  Facebook and Pinterest are close or tied for third place.

ETA: TikTok is also available for sharing from the eBay Social page. I do not use TikTok, so I do not know anything about it.

Okay so like I said I never see eBay listings in my Facebook newsfeed, so how does anyone see your listings there?  Do they have to go to Marketplace specifically?

And then ....Youtube?   I just checked several of your listings randomly and none of them had videos.  So what gets shared to Youtube, and how does anyone find it?  I spend a lot of time on Youtube and never seen eBay listings there, just videos.   Can you show a screenshot or something of what you're talking about?  I can't picture it whatsoever.

I don't want to mess with any of those other social media platforms (too toxic) so I'm sticking with Facebook and Youtube.

The listings shared on Facebook do not go to Marketplace. They go to your page. Here is the link to my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/kimsuncannyornaments/  I do not know for sure how people find the posts. I am guessing the posts are shown to people who have shown interest on Facebook in the type of items you are selling. Here is what one of my posts looks like, as it appeared in my feed.

With YouTube sharing from the Social page, you can use a video from your listing or let AI generate one. As you noticed, I do not have videos in my listings, so I use the AI-generated video. The AI-generated video is a slide show. It is not very impressive to me, but people look at them. Here is a link to my YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@Kimsuncannyornaments/shorts

I hope I am OK sharing those links...everything on my pages is eBay listings.
