Someone said in another thread that was hijacked & locked that I would be breaking the rules if I did this, that I would be in violation of ebay listing rules.....just wondering if they are right. Posters here seem to state info / opinions are factual and need to know the deal.
I PERSONALLY would think as long as the book is valid in THAT category.... why would I be not "Abiding" by the ebay rules, in that I would only be charged 10% as opposed to 12%, and this would not be fair to other sellers.
COMIC BOOKS are listed in COLLECTIBLES, THEY ARE NOT "BOOKS"!?
Many books are better seen and targeted towards THAT audience, if in a specific category so I am baffled by this, IF IT"S TRUE. ANd if it is true, I would think this is an injustice that could be beneficial to parties that are interested in that information.
If I had a book that teaches coding.... would it be ok to put it in the COMPUTER SOFTWARE category?
Please be specific.
Some "Rules" just don't make sense and would like to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks

Absolutely not. Star Wars is total trash and not Sci-Fi...
Star Trek rules!!! Now that's what you call Sci Fi. 😀

"ANTIQUE & COLLECTIBLE".
So need some clarification, since I was informed I was in VIOLATION by what I believe was a regular poster here in the community.
Kinda mixed messages here IMHO.

Sounds like fee avoidance to me so, no, not OK.

Hi nocoolnamejane, thanks for your insight!
ok, well, then there are THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of violations running rampant.
What are your thoughts then about the GRAPHIC NOVELS and Hard Cover archive "books" in the COLLECTIBLE COMICS CATEGORY? That is where they are searched, not in the book category.
I'm confused.

Absolutely.
eBay does a basic crawl through listings to search for easy to spot violations but most are reported by other users.
As far as listing graphic novels in the collectible comics category, unless said graphic novel IS a collectible (ie rare, out of print, old, etc) that would be fine, but a readily available mass produced GP would be miscategorized.
A clearer example from your OP:
"If I had a book that teaches coding.... would it be ok to put it in the COMPUTER SOFTWARE category?"
No because it's a book, not a software.
As far as which categories people use to search for books, most people search for a specific title, they don't just browse through categories.

Is it OK if I list a STAR WARS BOOK, in the SCI FI STAR WARS COLLECTIBLES CATEGORY?
perhaps the best idea is to ask a Blue.......
@Anonymous
Trinton, the question comes into play since the OP found out the FVF in book category is 12%....as opposed to 10%......so the question arises as to when is it OK NOT to list a book in the books category..... ie. Can a Star Wars book be considered a Star Wars collectble and therefore ok to list in that category?

Not only that but if you raise the question about being COLLECTIBLE, the book category sub category is ANTIQUE/COLLECTIBLE.
I am not trying or inquiring how to break the rules. I think this is a valid area for discussion. IS this NOT the "community" and this is DISSUSSIONS?
i could have posted the book I sold in the COMICS/PULPS category. So then I was in violation of paying 2% more! It seems there are a lot of items that CROSSOVER. Comic art is not in the ART CATEGORY, it's in the COMIC ART CATEGORY, though technically, it's ART.
Is it ok, if I ask others, or are you saying there is no room here for my question?
Still confused.

I kind of wonder if it is a bad idea to ask questions regarding violating eBay policies on eBay's boards. Also if you really want to break the rules and violate policies there are better categories with even lower fees. Honestly you might have better luck just following the rules you agreed to though.
Where is the OP asking how to break Ebay policies ? It reads to me that the OP is asking if it is OK to put a collectable item (which happens to be a book) into the category in which the item fits.

A second example in OP's post would be in violation of the fee avoidance policy:

You would have to ask yourself is there a category for the item specific to what you intend to list.
If there is a comic book category you would most likely have to list it under comic books.
A book teaching coding would most likely fall under books as it is not a computer software item.

The computer book was given to show contrast. THIS i could somewhat understand.
Can you please talk about a COMIC BOOK in the COLLECTIBLES category and also why does ebay have a specific category that says ANTIQUES/COLLECTIBLE in the books category if what was suggested was the criteria for not listing in the books category. IF THE BOOK IS OLD and GENUINELY Collectible?
Being a book collector, know that 1st printings/ editions are HIGHLY COllected, so why not allowed in a COLLECTIBLES CATEGORY, at the COLLECTIBLE FEE?
Still confused. Sorry.

You would have to ask yourself is there a category for the item specific to what you intend to list.
Exactly. So then.....why are there two categories to list books? A book is a book. A comic is collectible and is in the collectible category. But a First edition MOBY DICK is not "collected?"
Why have a sub listing category in books title ANTIQUES/COLLECTIBLE?
Shouldn't then ALL antique/Collectibles be listed in COLLECTIBLES, OR ANTIQUES?
I can understand a 12% fee on a book under what a new book costs, in the 10-20$ range. But if a book costs $1000+ or more than $100? Is that not considered a "collectible." Is a first edition book by CHARLES DICKENS, not ANTIQUE? Antiques are goods that are over 100 years old. So why is a 100+ year old book not allowed in the ANTIQUES category. Why is there no ANTIQUE BOOK CATEGORY in ANTIQUES? Why is there no collectible book category in collectibles?
All this makes me confused and want to understand what the problem is when someone tells me I am trying to avoid fees. I list an item where I feel it is best suited not based on the fee charged.
