Is a buyer entitled to a refund if they buy a gift card invalid in their country?

The above question assumes that the listing specified currency and eligible countries and had all other important information about the gift card in the listing.  The only missing condition would be a complete and comprehensive exclusion list.  This scenario as it is probably apparent is a situation I'm currently in!  I am going to be refunding the buyer anyways due to them not having a high level of English which meant they were presumably going in blind or using a translator.  But I am curious about the intricacies of situations like this.  Thanks a lot in advance!

Is a buyer entitled to a refund if they buy a gift card invalid in their country?

A few concerns I would have:  did the gift card have a balance, and does that balance still exist?  Is there any way you can confirm this?  Is the buyer aware that any refund will likely be reduced by any missing funds?

Language issues can be a smoke screen, a way to gain a slight edge and allow you to 'not understand' and elicit sympathy when none is really necessary.  And the Google translator is pretty good at what it does - with these new A.I. supplemented translators doing even better.  I've worked with many non-English speaking buyers - it's easy enough to translate in either direction and make conversation significantly more functional.

As always, do not refund until the purchased item is returned.  If the buyer made the mistake of buying something they cannot use, they should be responsible for return shipping.  Since you have no control over the funds associated with the card without the physical card, and will need it to confirm it has not been used or drained of funds, it really needs to be returned.

Good Luck!

Hi, have you reviewed the policy for digitally delivered goods? The link is below:

I noticed that you may not be selling some of your digital goods in the correct categories. As you are new to selling, you just need to be aware of the policies that govern the site.

As for the question of refund for a gift card—The subject is complicated by your item being delivered electronically. Once you have reviewed the policy for selling Gift Cards on eBay, link below, then decide how you should proceed. Digitally delivered gift cards are not allowed when the seller is considered to be “high risk”. As a result of that statement, i would steer clear of any future listing of such gift certificates. (That would also likely spur me to refund in this case.)

@viridians

If I were you, I would be more concerned about the digital delivered items you are selling.  You do not own the rights to those items and are also violating eBay policy.  The fact that you brought your inventory to this forum is going to be interesting because many of the posters here will report your listings.  You still have time to remove them and save your account.  I would do that today...quickly or your selling days are going to be short and swift.

The buyer is entitled a refund if the buyer says the item is "not as described".

Thank you to @rosachs , @inhawaii , and @fashunu4eeuh !  @ckimodog to you in particular, your indirect threat is really not the way to go here.  I have thoroughly reviewed all policies and I know what I am doing unlike you who has a zero tolerance policy towards digital delivery.  If you would like to escalate me to eBay support, you're fully free to do so.

@viridians

With all due respect, @ckimodog doesn't indirectly threaten. I think that was a nudge to proactively CYA.

@viridians Deeply regret you feel unwelcome here. I had hoped for your discourse rather than your swift withdrawal. Your input is valuable.
