If you could change one thing

Let’s have a discussion - without complaining and negativity - what is one thing you would like to see changed about the Ebay platform and why? What would the change do to help your business grow? Don forget the last part - the why is everything.

I’ll start - I would have Ebay require onboarding for new members when they want to sell items. I believe this would help with a lot of the new seller painpoints and bring a positive light to Ebay in general. It helps my business because it builds trust in the community - most trust equals more sales for myself and everyone else. I would also love to see Ebay explain their why during seller updates. I get that I need to require 30 day free shipping for top rated discounts but WHY is that going to help my business. Some facts would decrease the anxiety for most people.

This thread has been done 50 times or more recently, but ....

My first step as the new owner of the site (not CEO, .... Owner)  would be a full reboot.  Undo nearly everything that has been implemented by the last two CEOs including the Asian Invasion and the Mallization (don't look it up, I just coined it).  That means eliminate the retailers from the main site and move them off to a separate 'retail' section.

The main site would be focused on the type of seller that MADE the site famous.  That small, home brew and independant seller of the ecclectic, odd and unusual that you can't find elsewhere.  Also known as the Finklegruber Approach.

OK kids, time to get the Dodge loaded up again. I hear 'Poppy's By the Tree' calling. This trip might be a long one too.

Integrated video.

Seriously, the site still looks like it was designed in like 1995.

I would flat out prohibit video in all forms.

There has only been one case FOR it that I can remember in recent discussions.  That is to show how some older toys and antique items work since there are none in stores anymore for people to see or understand the item.  Despite my total ban for most items, I could aee allowing it for those types of items, but limited to a special category.

@statesplace

1. For Stores:  NO Fees to use the Scheduler (mainly for Auctions so they can close sequentially like a real live Auction) and NO Fees for adding BIN to Auction listings.  These are Free upgrades for Everday Rate plan members.

2. Feedback:  Can the current system and replace it

3. Feedback: short of item 2 above, allow Sellers to leave the same type of Feedback Buyers can

4. Feedback: short of items 2 & 3 above do NOT allow Neutral or Neg FB to be left until Buyer & Seller commuicate to resolve the issue

5. INR Claims: when an item is delivered after a Buyer processes and wins an INR claim the money gets reversed and paid back to the Seller.  Right now a slightly late delivery and Buyers win INR claims AND keep the item and Sellers lose their money

Re: If you could change one thing

I would remove that bubble in my purchase history that keeps following me and inviting me to file a claim when I scroll through my items, it's so irritating.

It's on ebay UK, don't know if you have that bubble on ebay.com.

Anyway, it's doing my head in.

Re: If you could change one thing

I would like to see ebay divide and segregate new from used and vintage items.

To me that is the only thing that will "save"  ebay in the long run.    If they could do it with eBay Motors - it shouldn't be that difficult.

Yeah, but it is interesting to see how some issues rise of fall in importance over time.

Re: If you could change one thing

You should see this in the doll category.  MINT with hair every which way, messed up in general,  looking like it got into a tug of war between two dogs.

But MINT.  I know hair can be combed, etc, but it strains credulity to say that it is MINT.

People looking for vintage items do not want to be shown factory new ones, and buyers looking for new items may not realize that the great bargain they found is used.  If ebay would create a place like ebay Motors where the new stuff can besold with all of ebay's new toys like catalog, then a large group of users would have a lot fewer problems shopping on ebay.

GREAT Post, deserves a repeat!!!  So here it is in Repeat Red Retrose!

Free Return will conceal fraud.  The false SNADs, etc.   Sellers for the most part do not want to offer Free Returns.  Buyers do not have to lie now,  sellers are now involuntarily defrauding themselves.  Sellers will be forced to raised their prices to off set those controllable returns.   Yeah sales may go up, but they will go up with a audience of buyers who want free return  and who believes this group is not going to use it.

My opinion:

"#1.  Any buyer who will only buy from me because I offer free returns is "Not" the type of buyer I am looking to attract.

#2.  Free returns already exist for those buyers who file SNAD, and/or damaged in shipment claims.   eBay does a great job of letting customers know, if they have a problem with their purchases;  the return  is "Free" of charge to them.   If a customer contacts me with a problem,  I have no problem paying for return shipping on a legitimate SNAD.

#3.  What advantage will a seller receive for opting into a Free return program;   I heard they would get better placement in search.   They only way that I would consider opting into Free returns is if I were guaranteed a 40 to 50% increase in sales, Oh, but wait , that takes me back to #1.    If this 40 to 50% increase comes from buyers who were attracted to the "Free" return shipping, chances are, 20 to 30% will take me up on that Free return, so, I feel no need to opt in.

Offering free returns for (any) reason and having that plastered within my listings is like self-mulitation and self-exploitation,............it simply is not good for me.   Its like waving a red flag:  Hey, I accept returns for "any" reason, I have deep pockets, and I'll foot the bill even for your mistakes.  "

I understand only sellers who want to remain TRS+ will  be required to participate, but all others have the threat of not appearing in search................... despite paying for the service,  the service of being seen in search, isn;t that what our fees are for.

I was told long ago by a very bored upper level CSR who was roped into working on Saturday (we talked basketball for a long time), that ebay motors was by far the most profitable segment of ebay (this was mid/late? 2000's).  I had asked, even then, why new wasn't separated from old like motors, and his answer was it was far too expensive to do that (programming, etc.).

Extrapolating from that conversation, it worth it for motors but not for depression glass.

When did ebay motors become separate, btw?  I bought a car on ebay when it was still just one big happy place, no paypal, wired the money, buyers got feedback, scroooed if there was something wrong with the car, etc.

@mr_lincoln

I think it wil be worse!  Because now they will need to file SNAD to get their original shipping refunded.

I fear that the kind of buyer who only buys from a seller because of free returns is also expecting free shipping.

Come the next seller update, I expect to see TRS+ requiring free shipping both ways.  Next it will be free shipping both ways for 60 days....and then the discount will get cut in half again.

I think we'll see Free Returns eliminate SNAD return claims for those who participate in this program, but at the same time it is entirely possible this will now serve to bring an increase against those sellers who don't offer Free Returns.   Will be interesting to see how this works out after it's been given some time.

Re: If you could change one thing

You guys do realize this will only conceal SNAD returns and open the flood gates for any kind of return..............all on the sellers dime.
