I mailed UPS package at post office - it has not shown up on tracking

I accidentally put a UPS package in a U.S Post Office chute.   Four days later, UPS does not show they have received the package, even though a "UPS driver picks up packages here daily."  The package is insured for $700.   The buyer and I are communicating and there is no dispute.  I will send an immediate refund the moment he asks for it.  So far, he wants to wait to see if the package eventually shows "received and in transit."  I opened a UPS investigation case for the package two days ago, but they have not yet asked which post office I place the package in, so it does not seem like a serious investigation yet.  The post office people said they can not search the UPS "hopper" for the package and they said a UPS driver picks up UPS packages daily.  I insured the package for $700 but I have no proof I put it in the post office "hopper."   IF THE BUYER DOES request the refund, how can I give it in such a way that if the package eventually shows up and he then will pay for it all over again, it does through eBay?

UPDATE:  I just noticed the eBay Order Details page lists my tracking number as USPS Ground and USPS as the carrier.  The tracking number starts with 1Z and is definitely a UPS labeled shipment.  I do not understand what is happening.  eBay also shows the shipment in transit coming from San Jose, CA.   - - - - Twilight Zone

Maybe one of those packages with two barcodes where UPS passes it off to USPS for the final leg of the delivery as described in post 5 ????

Would also account for you inadvertently dropping it in the USPS chute.

I'm pretty sure you can either edit the tracking number and put it in as UPS with the 1Z number or add another tracking number with the 1Z UPS one. (I've had two tracking numbers shown when I've voided and reissued a replacement USPS label.)

Once there's movement, it'll show on the UPS website and will show either an error or no movement on USPS.

It isn't that kind of label, but on a UPS forum site, a driver who said he picks up packages at the post office, said the post office may go ahead and scan and route the package and then deliver it with postage due.   The only thing that can account for my putting a UPS labeled package in a USPS mailing chute is my profound capacity for being oblivious.  That was a nice thought, though.  Thanks!

I accidentally put a UPS package in a U.S Post Office chute.....The package is insured for $700.

1) Don't put ANY packages in the US Post Office chute until you scan it first.  I wish people would not do that, I see it all the time when I am scanning packages for the chute, only to see some ignorant person throw in a 12x12x12+ without a scan and just jam it, leaving me to wait in line wasting my time with my scans "for the chute" that is now locked.  Scan it first, then you would have realized that it was a UPS package; otherwise, scan it first put it in the chute as the Self-Service Kiosk says to do.

2) Don't put any package in a "chute" when insured for $700.00, even at UPS (some outlets have a drop-in cage in the lobby).  You get an acceptance scan first, no excuses.  Your insurance is invalid because there is no acceptance scan; i.e, if UPS with a receipt is in possession of the item, they are bound by the insurance policy from that point.

Thank you shado-x.  I will do that with any future boxes.  There won't be any in the future like this one, but your advice is good even for small, inexpensive items.

The package has been scanned by UPS as of 1/4 and will be delivered only one day late.  Thank you Everyone for your feedback.  It is impossible to choose the best solution, so I picked the one with the best advice going forward.  What I could have done if the package did not show up -  Give the Buyer a refund and Create a Package Intercept to Return to Sender.  I dodged a bullet of my own firing and it will never happen again.

I sent back defective item to seller and was emailed a prepaid printed USPS label. I then put on the box, then immediately dropped off at post office in their designated package chute. Never showed up on tracking and seller said he never got it. It always showed pre delivery in the tracking system, never does it showed it was ever shipped! I am out $374 because I have no way to prove I dropped it in parcel chute inside the post office! Anyone reading this…always, I mean always stand in line and have the label scanned and you keep the receipt. What happens after this is on the shipper! The USPS line was long, but worth standing in line to avoid the hassle of losing a lot of money!

I mailed UPS package at post office - it has not shown up on tracking

Hi, I'm currently in the same situation. I had dropped off a UPS package in the backdrop off of USPS. I realized the day after and wasn't able to retrieve it I asked around and they said if it's found they will hand it to UPS. It's been two days and tracking hasn't updated. Do you recommend I create a claim with UPS and USPS? or am I out of luck?
