I recall that I never, ever, saw this much of an increase in shipping charges for 3 oz. via first class. Last year, I never saw any changes on any zip code I shipped to.
So, minutes ago I was printing a label from 95116 to 48867. I couldn't catch my breath when I saw $3.09
I said, wait! One of those glitches! Nahhhhhhh

First Class is zone based now and it did take a pretty good jump in price this year.

Yep, if you are located on the west coast and ship east of the Rockies where the bulk of the USA population resides your first class fees went up about 40%. The January 2019 postal increases were a windfall for Ebay.

That's because last year first class was not zone-based. It was based on weight only - no matter what zip a 3 oz. package was sent to/from, it cost the same.
In January that changed. First Class packages are now zone based.

Of course we knew that!
But I expect a good service, aren't I? Like paying priority mail 2 days delivery within California to be delivered in.....wait for the drums...…….11 days.

You should have used a flat-rate box.

Yuuuuup. And just a few days ago a buyer messages me and randomly asks "If I buy this right now, can you refund my shipping cost?" Think again, bucko!

It's going to get worse in June when the Dimension pricing for packages goes into effect. I'm going to stop selling items if it's a larger package since I won't be able to figure out the zone and dimension pricing on my own.

If you have the dimensions in the listing, using Calculated shipping, dim weight is already taken into account for Priority shipping, so it should be a slam dunk for first class parcel as well (one would think!)

At 15x16x17 there is no flat rate box size that can be used. If the items can be divided up, the large flat rate box is 12x12x5 and the large flat rate board game box is 23x11x3.

You exceeded the max 1 cu ft (1728 cu. in.) limit for standard USPS Priority shipping prices by over 2.36 times the limit > 15 x 16 x 17 = 4080 cu. in. or 2352 cu.in over the max. I think the USPS call this dimensional shipping rates.
BTW: No flat rate box would have handled that size of package(s) as was suggested by another poster. The large Priority flat rate box is 12 x1 2 x 6 or 864 cu.in. or 4.7 times smaller than the one you actually shipped.

here is a USPS link on this subject https://www.usps.com/dimensionalweight/
As a seller I stay away from selling any thing that won't fit into a 12 x12 x12 outside dimension box. Ran into that dimensional issue when I sold a western style hat one time - almost made a "Yankee Dime" on that sale. Never again did I sell another one. Live & Learn as it is what it is.
