I recall that I never, ever, saw this much of an increase in shipping charges for 3 oz. via first class. Last year, I never saw any changes on any zip code I shipped to.
So, minutes ago I was printing a label from 95116 to 48867. I couldn't catch my breath when I saw $3.09
I said, wait! One of those glitches! Nahhhhhhh

Somebody has to pay for all the e-packets delivered from China. LOL!

Until June, the dimensional weight only applies to Priority Mail going to Zones 4 - 9. So the current tactic for larger packages is to just use calculated shipping. The farther buyers seeing the outrageous postage costs will just self-select out, and closer buyers will see a normal weight-based postage cost. Depending on the item, you could also offer Retail Ground or Parcel Select so farther buyers could choose a cheaper but slower service.
In short: List those hats and other large items NOW!

The dimensional weight of that box is 4080 / 194 = 21.03 so it will ship at the 22-pound rate.
In June, the new dimensional weight will be 4080 / 166 = 24.57 so it will ship at the 25-pound rate.
As noted elsewhere, USPS currently charges dimensional weight only for packages going to Zone 5 - 9 via Priority Mail, but starting in June will charge dimensional weight for all zones for Priority Mail, Priority Express, Parcel Select, and Retail Ground. (I think they might already be charging it for Retail Ground.)

It makes me cringe when I hit double figures in ounces on a 1st Class Package

Actually your double-digit weight will be okay until it exceeds 12 ounces, as the price changes in the First Class Package table are grouped into four-ounce increments. i.e. Pricing within each Zone stays the same for 4.0 ounces or less, 4.1 to 8.0 ounces, 8.1 to 12.0 ounces, and 12.1-15.999 ounces.
Thus if your package is just teetering over the edge of a boundary, such as a weight of 4.1 ounces, 8.1 or 12.1 ounces, it would pay you a little to see if you can bring down the package weight slightly. Otherwise there's no need to try.

One other think I noticed is that for some packages, depending upon weight and dimension, using FedEx SmartPost can save significant money in shipping costs. I now list most bulkier items as shipping via FedEx SmartPost and I note on listings that I reserve the right to switch carriers. But the only change would be to Priority, an upgrade, so there should be no complaint.

I thought this to until I talked to the postmaster at the main USPS in Salt Lake. He told me as long as a package does not exceed 1 pound it can be shipped first class. IF THE LABEL IS PURCHASED ONLINE. I.E. eBay. If you take it in then it is 12oz. I thought he was not telling the truth so I weighed in a package at 15.99 ounces (even though it weighed 11.) and the post office let me ship it first class. Hope this helps. Do it quick before they change again.

Thanks, the OP said they shipped from KY to Idaho so "I'm guessing" they fell in the zone range of 5 to 9.
BTW - don't buy any more of those 10 gallon western hats or any other big fat things to sell and really don't like the idea of shipping via ground services by any carrier, especially a light weight package - it is just me - don't try to look for trouble.
