Hundreds of listings removed. Reason: Only eligible sellers may list airbags. They are not airbags.

I sell used auto parts and suddenly suddenly every listing I have for clock springs have been taken down for policy violations. The specific reason stated is "Only eligible sellers may list airbags. At this time you are not eligible to list this item." My items are not airbags. They are not listed in an airbag category. The word airbag is not in any of the listings. I've been selling these for several years. First it was 1 listing. I called, and the first person said they put the listing in for review. Then about 10 minutes later I get a message saying hundreds of my listings have been removed for the same reason. I called back and the second person I spoke to was no help at all. Did a person do this or is it some mistake the system has made?

Wikipedia tells me that a clock spring is a component of the air bag system.

@swappart,

I see 16 active listings for clock springs on your account, and they are available to be purchased (are not blocked from purchase). How many should there be?

I also see 58 sold listings, dating right up to several that were sold yesterday. Is that number correct, or are some missing?

This is from the email. I'm sure I'll get more emails containing the rest.

Hundreds of listings removed. Reason: Only eligible sellers may list airbags. They are not airbags.

Its not really part of the airbag system, although it is related. The clock spring connects the driver airbag to the wire harness in the steering column. Airbags are restricted because they are considered hazardous and require special training to package for shipping. Clock springs don't have shipping restrictions.

The clock spring is located in the steering wheel. It makes the electrical connections between the driver airbag and steering wheel switches and functions, into the steering column. The spiral "clock spring" tightens or loosens as the steering wheel turns on the column.

It's not an airbag though. A lot of things are part of the airbag system but are not restricted items. I've been selling these on eBay for years. It's a huge market, hundreds of other sellers selling the same thing in the same category. So far, I don't see any other sellers having this issue but me.

Edit: I'm starting to see my competitors listings disappear now.

Realistically, that's a bit of a stretch. The clock spring design predates air bags, and was used for any component in the steering wheel requiring one or more electrical connections, such as radio buttons or cruise controls. The air bag uses that connection method for triggering, but the clock spring is not part of the air bag. (In my limited experience disassembling steering wheels, the air bag is the first thing to remove, followed by everything else, with the clock spring removed last, on the bottom.)

Your limited experience is vastly more than my non-existent experience!

I agree but a faulty clock spring or faulty installation renders an air bag useless doesn't it?

@swappart,

Yeah, that's a lot of listings that were removed.

I checked some of the listings that remained and couldn't find any mention of "airbag" in them (just like you said). I thought that might explain why they had not been removed.

I tried searching for some of the listings that were removed, and found some cached listings, with no suggestion of the word "airbag" in them. Unfortunately, cached pages no longer include any of the description, so I couldn't check them out to confirm that.

I suggest that you try contacting eBay customer service at the eBay for Business on Facebook. They may be able to check the listings and help you figure out what triggered the removals.

Sure, but I'm not sure what you're getting at here (and I'm not criticizing your research 🙂). Clock springs will need replacement when the existing one wears out and breaks. Anything in the steering wheel can lose power at that time. In the case of something critical like the airbag, a warning light will illuminate to show that there is no continuity through the firing circuit to enable it to deploy.

A faulty installation is not likely to fire the air bag. A typical system has multiple deceleration sensors (e.g. on the radiator support, on the firewall, in the dash and elsewhere) that must signal within a very narrow timespan (definitely less than a second) before the controller will deploy the airbags, and it takes a majority "vote" of the sensors to trigger, so in other words, you can't accidentally trigger the system by bonking one sensor with a wrench.

So anyway, I am getting way off-topic. I will just agree with the others here that banning clock spring sales simply on the basis of some connection to air bags is misguided, but this is eBay's forum to run as they please.

None of my listings have ever contained the word airbag. I have my own custom software and all of my listings would be essentially the same as the ones you saw. I spoke to the same person again at CS and he did confirm it is a person, and not the system that removed the listings. I'm seeing my competitors going through this now as well. He said it's something the back office is responsible for, and they are looking into it. He still keeps alluding to a policy change, but I don't see that and if it were such a thing, I think the reason should not be "Only eligible sellers may list airbags.

Hundreds of listings removed. Reason: Only eligible sellers may list airbags. They are not airbags.

Yes, it will, but so will a lot of other things.

Disconnecting the battery will make the airbags useless (along with everything else, obviously). Cutting the connection anywhere between the battery and the airbag will make the airbag useless. A frayed wire, that creates a short to ground that is detected by the control module, will make the airbag useless.

The clock spring is just a connection, part of the electrical system that connects the airbag to the vehicle wire harness, which connects it to the control module, which connects to the battery. A damaged clock spring will break the connection.

Exactly. If they wanted to get technical, they could say the battery is part of the airbag system since it won't work without it. Crash sensors are part of the system too, and though I only have 1 listing for them, it has not been affected by this.

The salvage yards in Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Mansfield and Youngstown all stopped selling airbags about the same time, maybe 1.75 years ago. eBay is probably concerned about liability with the recalls and lawsuits related to bankrupt automotive airbag manufacturer Takata. Opinion.

The clock springs should be excluded from the prohibition. Another case of eBay throwing the baby out with the bath water. Perhaps that item can be reinstated.

I recommend not buying any more of these airbags to resell and liquidate what you have on some other selling website. Sorry about your added labor and loss.

Who would I need to speak to at eBay regarding determining if my items are restricted? I've talked to a few CS reps, and none have been very helpful. They tell me they can't appeal the removals. I'm not asking for that. I want to talk to someone who can explain why the email says my items were removed because I'm not an approved airbag seller, when the items are clearly not airbags. I see over 10,000 results when I search for clock spring, and only 60 are in the airbag parts category. So, why are my listings down, but not everyone else's?
