Is it possible to send a free sample to a buyer? I would imagine that it would violate some policy or another by asking for an address. But I have a quantity of an inexpensive item and I would like to send a free sample to one buyer for evaluation.
Is the only option to ask a stranger to trust me that I will refund a purchase?

Yes; refund is the only way. You can set up another listing for .99c and have the buyer purchase, then refund.

List one for $1.00 free ship.

Once the buyer buys one you can give them 2,000 free samples if you choose. Unless someone buyers something from you they are NOT a buyer and you cannot just randomly send items to people in the mail as that is spam.

Better yet, @m60driver, send the buyer a private offer for $1 - you'll find the button on the first eBay message they sent through the listing.
It's a win all the way around.

Sounds like a lot of work for a free sample...couldn't you just sell them all in a lot? I would think ebay would frown on asking for an email address when no sale has transpired.

Create a coupon for a Free one and enclose it in an existing order. Honor it to a prior Buyer (whose addy you will have) who wishes to redeem it.
