Google Shopping likes plain backgrounds. So does eBay,
Another poster said something about "natural settings" ... keep the plain backgrounds ... your item will do better in search and it is much easier for a buyer to see that there are no flaws on the pieces.
"Natural setting" - meaning natural lighting, no odd backgrounds (like the black background) - clear photos (i.e., correct lighting - no yellowing), no excessive cropping. Groups shown on flat surface under natural lighting brings out sparkle rather than hot spots or glare. It's actually pretty easy to achieve.
A black background is actually pretty standard for taking pictures of clear glass. It's not "odd" at all. It allows tha glass to actually be seen with no distortions due to things in the background.
I use "daylight" bulbs in all of my fixtures for an even lighting that gives correct color. I use a black background on all of my clear crystal and glass.
It is possible to get "sparkle" without a "natural setting" using the correct lighting.
Ugh - whatever.
Think about it this way:
Take your clothes off of the mannequin, put the items on a flat surface in a natural setting with natural light. Or use a live model in different poses in an outdoor setting so that the buyer can see the "flow" of the garment. Don't crop the photos at all.
If not, why not?
Because these are PRODUCT photos. Both your clothes and my glass are products. Standard product photos are taken on a plain background and the product should take up at least 85% of the picture. We aren't doing magazine "style" shoots, here. We are showing our product in the clearest possible way. Especially on pre-owned glass and china, it is necessary to be able to show the condition of the item clearly. Black backgrounds for clear items does that. Cropping so that the item takes up most of the frame does that.
Plus ... not everybody has the luxury of having a large dining room table in a room with southeastern facing windows with wonderful natural light.
I saw a picture of a frying pan this morning (I'm shopping for extra pieces of my discontinued cookware). The picture is taken in the bathroom, on the bathroom sink. That's a flat surface in a natural setting, isn't it?
Here it is ... beautiful isn't it? (She's asking $35 for it LOL)

I am so grateful to all of you who put their experience and time into answering my question! Wonder now how I have sold anything, lol. By the way, The face cream cannot be split off with me starting a new Ebay ID and there goes 10 years and both accts would lose 100% feedback and only one company would inherit the numbers. Beau Visage ( the cream ) Has a 10 year history and thousands of clients. Tried that already
Anyway, I printed off every reply you guys sent and am making a sell book for me from them..............
AGAIN THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME! I was supposed to receive emails when you replied, I didn't and just happened to check today.
God Bless............

Having created three accounts from my original account three year ago I didn't find that my lack of feedback on the new accounts was a problem. In fact the new account seemed to give old inventory new life.
I can see where a new account would not work for your face cream business, but I don't see a similar downside for selling china and crystal.
