How to not get scammed when doing local pick up?

I am planning to sell a high value item through local pick up in a day or two. Can you provide some tips on avoiding scams? I have heard that sometimes buyers will pick up an item and then claim that they never received the item. I plan to only take cash or an app like cashapp or PayPal (and ONLY friends and family on pickup if they insist on using PayPal)  to combat this.

Are there any other scams to avoid? I am also slightly worried that they will pull the "item was defective" return scam.

Thanks

When a buyer purchases as "Local Pick-Up" they will be offered a QR code, they should allow the seller to scan the code at time of pick-up. If you don't have the ability to scan the code you can take the number and enter it into eBay just as you would with tracking.

Be aware, you cannot control the method of payment, with Managed Payments in effect most of the time buyers will pay for the order through eBay so while you can state that other payment methods are available on pick-up it would be more likely that the buyer will have already paid prior to pick up via any of the methods eBay accepts.

Not as described claims on a local pickup are extremely rare, eBay will only allow them under limited circumstances and usually only when the item in question cannot be readily examined at time of pick-up.

As far as other scams....usually item dependent, you didn't give any indication of the type of item so hard to give advice.

Ebay requires an online payment method to be offered on all listings because they are an online marketplace.

Doesn't mean they will definitely pay online but they might.

You can in fact control the method of payment by telling the buyer that you'll only accept cash.

What you are describing "Additional Seller Terms" in a listing is a violation of ebay's rules.

@berrset1

Here's a really good eBay help page that should explain everything you need to know to protect yourself when offering an item with local pickup:

Offering local pickup

You didn't mention what the item is, but if it's something a buyer has to take home in order to discover whether it matches the description, said buyer could indeed file for an "item not as described."

An example might be a washing machine. You have it out on the driveway, ready for pickup. The buyer gets it home, installs it, and discovers it leaks all over their floor. The buyer can file for a refund/return.

https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/posting-items/setting-postage-options/local-pickup?id=4181

Cash in hand,

q code or number string from the purchaser when they pick it up.  Make sure it works before it leaves..

Edited to add best to copy of valid ID when picking up item as well as a written signed receipt of item picked up.

As for payment they can use the normal systems through eBay to pay. You can not refuse it.

Truth is they can always come back on you as not as described....

If it is picked up and marked paid for, one can scam you with an item not as described.

Nope. No can do.

As stated earlier, sellers are required to offer a form of electronic payment and must accept it if the buyer selects it.

You can tell the buyer whatever you want BUT you cannot force them to comply. I do local pickup on a infrequent but regular basis and always have,  I have not had a single buyer pay cash at pickup in many years, they always pay via eBay and that is not just since Managed Payments. So while it's possible to get paid in cash it is not possible to require it.

It's simple: No cash, no item. Have a nice day.

I can assure you no one is going to give you cash after they already paid online.

I have also had two pricey local pick up items paid with PP, no problems. And as one of the blues has mentioned in here before, canceling the transaction for paying by PP will give the seller a big, fat, defect.

I can assure you that if I require cash for a local pickup, and the buyer pays online, I'll refund the payment and let them know.
