"I usually go with the auction format. I lack patience."
That, my friend, contradicts itself.
So, don't do that?
Well, not necessarily, maybe. If you think about an auction ending in 7-10 days, or whatever it is nowadays, vs GTC and 8(?) re-listings, I think my patience would be stretched if awaiting a sale on a BIN.

Patience is very important. Patience can lead to success.
thanks....

"Hi - Amazing story. If you don't mind sharing, what type of ashtray and what type of car did it come out of? Thanks, L"
It was an add-on accessory back then and not put in every car so it is very hard to find. it was out of a 1932 ford. It mounts to the glove box door. The original is chrome over metal but you can buy repops in the same exact size and shape but they are stainless steel so at first glance they look the same and hard to tell the difference especially over the net without seeing them in person. The repop sells for $150 if I remember correctly.
I have been hearing stories since I watched that one sell for so much that they tend to sell between $400-$1,000 when you can find them. I would have never thought that before watching that one sell, I was thinking $100 bucks max but I didn't know at that time it was an add-on either and not standard equipment .
As I mentioned above that I have been hearing $400-$1000 since but then you add in auction fever and 2 guys that must have it and you end up with a happy buyer spending $2,000. Not bad for an auction that started at $19.99

Hi - What I mean is with an auction, starting low, you can see how you are doing. With a "buy it now" it sits there & you wonder if it is priced OK or not. L

Hi ms*havisham - I continue to seek a happy medium or formula, if you will, to know if an item should be listed auction format or buy it now. I keep trying to learn. Some sellers may have it down pat, but I am not one of them. Thanks, L

If you have a general idea what something is worth. Buy it now. Maybe at a higher price. You can always lower it later.
If you don't know what something is worth. Auction it and let the people decide.
Having said that, if you think something is worth $x with comps, but auctions usually net you more than that. It might be worth just sticking with what you know. An alternative is to do it as Buy It Now at slightly higher price than you think it's worth. Maybe lower the price a bit each week. And if it doesn't sell after a month or three, auction it off.
