I listed an item for sale via auction and the auction ended. I sent a message to the buyer to arrange for inspection, PayPal payment, and pickup as listed item clearly stated "local pickup only" (large, heavy item, not feasible to break down, pack, and expensive to ship.)
After two days of NO response, I went to the Resolution Center to open a case and eBay said it was sending a message to the buyer indicating that I, the seller, wanted to cancel the order as the buyer has been unresponsive.
It is now more than four days since the case was opened, but I CANNOT CLOSE the case and I seem to be in menu hell trying to contact someone in eBay to resolve this.
What other options do I have? Who is ultimately responsible for closing a case when the buyer never responds to repeated messages?
Thank you, and very frustrated with eBay customer support.

I think he said he was initiating the cancellation so I am assuming he didn't use buyer/address as the reason but could be wrong. Kind of a tricky situation but I would have opened a UPI as the buyer never came to pay *and pick-up*.

I just wish that eBay would keep me informed about their attempts to get the buyer to respond instead of having to wait ten days; that's an eternity when decisions have to be made about disposition, etc.
Thanks to all who tried to help; very much appreciated.

There is nothing to inform you of. They send the buyer the cancellation notice when you initiate it and that's it. No further communication.
