You do this using buyer requirements. http://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?BuyerBlockPreferences // Buyers who may bid on several of my items and not pay for them >> Block buyers who are currently winning or have bought N of my items in the last 10 days.

Above no longer works?

May I ask why you want to limit your buyer's ability to purchase?  I'm just curious as I don't know why it is a useful block.

It stops sport bidders (create a new 0 feedback account because bored or vindictive) or ignorant newbies who don't realize they are committing to purchase from hitting BIN on some/most/every item listed and tying everything up in UPIs for a week when they don't pay.

Not as much of an issue anymore with seller applied or eBay automatically applied Immediate Payment Required, and there may be some sort of buyer limits in place that might also mitigate damage, but I left mine in place anyway:
Block buyers who are currently winning or have bought 3 of my items in the last 10 days.
Only apply this block to buyers who have a feedback score of 5 or lower.

It's the only defense eBay provides for those unlikely, but possible scenarios, and worth the possible loss of a sale here and there.

Thank you for the explanation.  I've always wondered why.  I've never used it.

How often do you look at your report on which buyers were blocked for what reason?  It would show you how many members tried to purchase but were blocked.  It only goes back 90 days, but sometimes that report contains some interesting information.

I agree with the way bidding on auctions go for me anymore, this isn't even a remote possiblity that a buyer would be purchasing too many items.  I remember back prior to April of 2014 I'd sometimes get a buyer bidding and/or purchasing 40+ different patterns from me at a time.  I don't think I had even a single buyer of that quantity last year.  And certainly none this year.

I used to check it a couple of times a week, but quit looking at the Buyer Requirements Activity Log a while back because it showed nothing for 6 months or more and appeared to be broken, and now with 37 sales in the last 90 days can't be bothered.

Only entry in the log since last fall was on at end of May. Buyer with a bit over a year on eBay with 2 feedback tried twice to buy 3 or more of an item I have listed with high shipping more than the item cost, that can't be combined, that has never been bought in more than single qty, and was denied by that 3 in 10 days buyer requirement setting I mentioned.

Had they really been interested, they could have contacted me to find out why they couldn't purchase. When I saw the log entry, I eBay messaged them simply explaining the block, and if they were still interested, etc. Heard nothing back. Probably dodged a bullet.

A few years ago I lost out on selling a $300 piece of pottery to a buyer who had grabbed 1 or 2 of the other pieces (I had it set lower at 1 or 2 at the time). Emailed her and found out she was done with here whirlwind art buying spree and was no longer interested. Ended up selling it I think for a bit less on a BO some months later.

So the block is a tradeoff. It prevents potentially all your listings from being taken out and tied up in UPIs, but can result in lost sales here and there. Settings need to be adjusted from time to time depending on what actually transpires. Kind of like fire or life or health insurance. You pay for it, mostly never use it, but when you need it, it is worth it.
