A buyer opened a case against me on May 2nd, and it was eligible for escalation on May 5th, although the buyer never responded again after my last message in the claim. How many days does it take for it to automatically close? I read on Google it takes 21 business days (which I would assume would be today May 31), or 36 days of inactivity (June 6th), which seem like 2 different perspectives. Does anyone have any insight?

Has the buyer been issued a return shipping label? Some buyers wait until the last minutes to ship items back.
Inactive cases usually close after the return shipping date passes. About 21 business days.

@ebooksdiva I didnt agree with the buyers reason for return, and the case was never escalated, so no return was ever approved. There has been no activity since May 2.

If you did not authorize a return, eBay will most likely refund the money, let the buyer keep the item and ding your metrics.

The time can vary, but in your situation, the case will automatically close AGAINST YOU.
The buyer will be refunded with your funds and will not be required to return the item.
In the future, is someone files a INAD case, just accept the return.
Pay for a return shipping label.
If the buyer sends the item back, you will be required to refund.
If the buyer does not send the item back (that happens a lot) you do not have to refund
and you will not be charged for the return shipping label.
Consider this a learning lesson.
I hope the item wasn't too expensive.

I would be approving a eBay provided shipping label or adding my own return shipping label to the case.

It won't close without resolution. Accept the return and provide a return label.
