I have a return request that the buyer filed back in March 12. It was a buyer saying they wanted to exchange it for another size, but didn't specify which size. I told them I'd honor it, just tell me which size. They've stopped responding since March 12 and the request is still open in my return details page. I assumed the buyer decided to keep their item.
Shouldn't this return time out already and close?

I'm not going to do anything. Just wondering how long do these returns sit in the details page for before closing due to inactivity. I thought it was 30 days.

It should time out after 30 days, but Ebay does typically take a little longer than that to auto close. However almost 45 days is a bit excessive. You can continue to wait or call Ebay to get it closed out and I'd ask why they had not done it already. I find that a bit curious.

I had a return request close after 20 days. Yours may take a bit longer to close. Just wait it out.

The auto close should happen on a Request for Return after 30 days. Something is wrong with the OP having to wait almost 45 days and it still isn't closed. Either the OP has the dates wrong or there is something else going on and they can only find out what that might be by calling. The longer the Request is opened the longer they buyer may decide to become active on the Request again. It has aged out per the Ebay rules, now the OP just needs to get Ebay to close the darn thing.
As for yours, you can get Requests closed quicker. Buyers are allowed 5 business days to ship the item back after the seller agrees to the return. You can get a Request closed shortly thereafter if the buyer doesn't ship with tracking uploaded to Ebay. Or an INR can be closed quicker if the tracking shows it was delivered. Things like that, but someone prompted something to get a request closed at 20 days. Possibly you or the buyer escalated it.

Yea, that's what I was thinking too. That I'd need to call to close it out because some glitch caused the return to fail to close itself. I was hoping it would eventually close itself out because I was worried that I would get a sympathetic agent who would tell me to reach out to the buyer again and wait a couple more days (which I believe is beyond my obligation as a seller). Messages were already sent to them long ago.

Well if you do, make and excuse and get off the phone. Call back and hopefully get someone that knows what they are talking about. Ebay should not be requiring that at all. That has no support in any of the rules of Ebay. While I know some CSRs [customer service reps] make it up as they go. That doesn't mean that you need to stay on the phone to hear that hogwash. Be polite, get off the phone and just call back.

It is 30 days from the date the Request was opened, NOT 30 business days. If you have seen what you stated in a written policy as you have stated, please post the link so we may all be updated by it.

There was actually a post on the shipping and returns board here a while back about it takes 30 business days to have one closed
It has been my experience that it is 30 days. I'm sorry you had a different experience. I know that it can be difficult to get consistant support from the call center even when the rules are in writing on the site.

So here's the weird deal... up until I started this post I THOUGHT that it was 30 calendar days (not 30 business days). This is because it used to close out on it's own at the correct time.
But coincidentally I was going to call ebay this morning to close it, but it went ahead and closed itself with the same verbiage as the time out reason. I'm too lazy to do any math... since 3/12 thru today 4/24... has it been exactly 30 business days?

If you were to do the math, you would see that this is 37 business days.
I know it gets confusing and Ebay only adds fuel to the misunderstandings. It is no wonder that the call center often times can't answer a question correctly.
If you go back to the link I provided a few posts back, you will see that when Ebay is talking about business days, they say so. When they do not specifically call out calendar days, they just say days.
A good example is 30 day return policies. That is 30 calendar days NOT 30 business days. Same with 60 day return policies. That is 60 calendar days NOT 60 business days.
I have no answer as to why it took ebay so long to auto close your claim. It should have been done the middle of this month.

Ebay should change their policy for closing out these returns... "If there is inactivity these returns will automatically close out when we get to it."
