How does eBay decide a dispute

I sold a used wallet to a buyer who purchased using Buy it Now rather than placing a bid. I listed it as gently used in nearly new condition. Fossil wallet. The buyer who had joined eBay the day before making the purchase, contacted eBay for a refund  and stated that the item was not as described. I had posted detailed pictures. eBay ultimately decided in her favor. I don't do a lot of selling but I've sold a fair amount and I've never had this happen. The buyer never contacted me at all. The item was described accurately yet eBay decided against me. How does eBay decide in whose favor the dispute should go?

eBay offers buyers a money back guarantee if they report the item is not as described. So they have two choices when a buyer files a dispute:

1) find in favor of the seller, and eBay refunds the buyer

2) find in favor of the buyer, and the seller refunds the buyer

Since every seller has given eBay the power to decide disputes however they see fit, it does not take a rocket scientists to figure out that eBay is going to rule in the buyer's favor in the overwhelming majority of disputes.

Re: How does eBay decide a dispute

Did the buyer open a not as described case?  In that case, you could ask for a return for refund but you would have had to pay return shipping, then refund for the item and original shipping.  Or you could simply refund.

Somehow it strikes me as strange that a new buyer, just two days old, knows to say not as described.

On almost every page, though, there is the Ebay MBG statement, get the item you ordered or your money back.  Ebay usually finds for the buyer.

You might want to research Buyer Protection.

Sorry, but to me detailed pictures mean more than 3. You don't have detailed pictures of the edges of the wallet. Regardless, as castle has said, in the case of an item not as described ebay will usually find in favor of the buyer.

Re: How does eBay decide a dispute

Ebay has an unwritten rules saying that if a seller questions a case they automatically get a defect. Remember something important. Once a buyer claims not as described the buyer is considered honest and always is right. Sad fact of life. Have been told numerous times a seller should automatically return their money and write the loss off as a business expense. Good luck to you!!

Re: How does eBay decide a dispute

When someone opens a Not As described Case eBay looks at it as not as described. In this situation you have to accept the return and pay the return shipping.

If the buyer makes an obvious error such as saying via messages that the just don't like it you may have a chance of fighting it.

Experienced seller often just accept the return rather then allowing eBay to settle the case and allow the buyer to keep the item.

That's why it's a 2-headed coin, and ebay calls heads.

Re: How does eBay decide a dispute

Condition is subjective.....in this situation eBay will decide in the buyer's favor 99.9% of the time.

Your concept of "gently used" may not be in line with what your buyer thinks is gently used.

Sorry to say this, but ebay will side with the buyer most of the time. Especially with INAD cases.

I figured that ebay has a big dartboard in the office and the pearl sized bullseye is the spot when sellers win.

Ah Rose,

Apparently the Dart Board has been turned over for a long time...on the back there is a sticker...

Re: How does eBay decide a dispute

I won one and I was shocked!  Ebay said it was not my fault because a newbie only communicated with me outside ebay and I messaged her within ebay very nicely telling her how NOT to break the zipper on the new one....  so ebay refunded her out of their money!  I got paid, but since the newbie slammed me with a case and I was still out the $ for the replacement and shipping, I BBL'ed that newbie into oblivion!
