Hi- I posted an item for sale for my son and haven’t ever sold anything on eBay. Seller contacted me via eBay message giving me their Perosnal phone number asking me to text it. I did and they said for me to send them the eBay link of my item and my PayPal info so they didn’t pay the wrong person- I sent it and they said they would be purchasing it. Well, now I haven’t heard back from them- don’t know if it’s a scammer or what but I didn’t think that’s how this usually works.

That's how.
eBay works like every other website.
To buy, you click a button.
To pay, you click a button.
To ask a question, you click a button.
There's no reason (no legit reason) to try to buy something without clicking he button, here or anywhere else. There's already a process set up...AND...it's easier than all the hoop jumping.
It's akin to going to Best Buy, picking out a big TV and telling the clerk to meet you in the alley out back at the old van parked under the broken street light for payment in cash.

Every buyer has amazing feedback. Sellers can't leave negative feedback. Most sellers automatically leave great feedback for purchasers and they can't change it even if the buyer turns out to be a fraud. Buyers with long feedback histories are less likely to be frauds but sometimes, they too, turn out to be frauds.

As a failsafe, doing anything outside of the system is just asking to be scammed. That's why people try to take transactions off the system, so that YOU have no recourse when they rob you blind.
If it doesn't seem right, don't even THINK about doing it.
