Sorry if this is a stupid question, I’ve been looking and can’t find anything. I sold an item and shortly after got an email from PayPal saying I’d been paid. I immediately figured something was fishy as my eBay and PayPal emails are separate. Ive confirmed with PayPal it was a phishing email and have reported it. I’m wondering how did the “buyer” get my eBay email? Is it on the invoice when and item is sold/bought?
Thanks! 🙂

They can see who they 'paid' in paypal, which is an email address. If it's the same email you use, there you have it.

Perhaps it is a new account and the buyer has had a previous encounter/purchase from you in the past under a different name/account?

Generally it is some one who made an offer and asked you for your paypal information. A scam of course and then you get the fake payment notice.
Seems some one may have upgraded the method if you did not send them the information.

I’ve never given my email to a seller. My eBay and PayPal are separate, so that was another red flag. The phishing email was sent to my eBay email. So I’m figuring my email was somewhere for them to see?

That's odd. I can't see a seller's email on any of my eBay transactions. Can you point it out for me?

They either googled it or guessed. Many people have an email that matches their user ID. Kind of a bad thing to do.

I still can’t figure out where they got the email, my user name and email are different. I’m glad I’m not losing my mind at least!
Part of me wonders if it really was/is a legitimate sell, but the fact both eBay and PayPal don’t show payment is a red flag. The buyer also did reach out to me asking for my PayPal (another red flag) and when I responded they needed to pay through eBay the communication stopped. Very fishy.
