How Many times Do We See This

"After my fees etc. I have a loss or Ebay is taking 30% out for everything". These posts are killing me. I guess I need another drink.

Get real, did they account for the shipping cost to ship an item if its free shipping? Did they account for the deduction of shipping supplies, mileage to and from a shipping center? What about the Ebay fees? My suggestion is to read up on business deductions or talk to your CPA.

The so called 30% is really not 30% once the deductions are claimed.

The final net sales are not final until you file your quarterly or year-end tax return thus providing a final net percentage.

Business 101 is a slang referencing the first basic course in college. T&C = Terms and Conditions.

What has the weight have to do with the FVF's eBay applies? Are you by chance including what what USPS, UPS or FedEx takes?

NO I am not talking about what the post office takes. The weight causes the price to sometime quadruple depending the item. Ebay steals that money right out from under you. This is what you constantly keep forgetting and posting untruths. Ebay fools you into believing their charge is 12.9%.

Selling things here when the postage far exceeds the price of the item is stupid. As is calling it “stealing” when the fee schedule is fully documented.

"Ebay fools you into believing their charge is 12.9%."

While I completely disagree with your interpretation of eBay's User Agreement, please try to keep up with the facts.

About four months ago, mid-February of 2023, the standard Final Value Fee (FVF) percentage was raised by 0.35%.
Less than half of one percent.

The standard FVF percentage used to be 12.9%, for the first six weeks or so of this year.  It is now 13.25%.

On eBay, one can find a wide difference in the selling ability of users, from the ultra-professional sellers to the utterly clueless.

I agree but when you have 50 items that weight a lot it really hurts that you cannot list them on Ebay. Even things that weight less but are oversize like a golf club as an example. Might as well just sell it for $5 at a garage sale do to oversize postage cost and Ebay snagging and additional $5 from you.

@fashunu4eeuh   Fortunately for me my sell-through on average of 90 days is around 35% so I am glad I am one that knows how to move things. Unfortunately you are right, some are clueless and blame Ebay that no one wants their stuff.

I absolutely love when people say "you can write that off", like okay but that still doesn't mean I'm making money lol. Not to mention you can't write of 100% of every single thing; which most people assume as well as assuming that what ever we write off we get back in the form of a check from the government lol. That would be great!

@laststopgeneralstore

It also doesn't mean that Ebay is at fault.  As I explained above.  Sellers often confuse the cost of shipping as somehow being something that they pay Ebay.

If a seller is properly pricing their stuff, taking into consideration all their costs, they should be fine.  And yes, costs get to be written off.  But again if the seller priced their stuff correctly, there is room in the profit portion of the sale to make it worthwhile for the seller.

I'm not sure what cost you think you can't write off if it has to do with your sale of that item.  You would need to be a bit more specific.

"which most people assume as well as assuming that what ever we write off we get back in the form of a check from the government lol."  Well I have to say I've been around a LONG time and I've never heard anyone say anything even remotely like this.

How do you define "stealing"?  The dictionary defines it as: the action or offense of taking another person's property without permission or legal right and without intending to return it.

How is Ebay doing that?  We all have to agree to the User Agreement before we can become a member of this site.  The Selling fees is a publish policy there for everyone to see.  You don't just get to ignore all that just so you can claim Ebay is "stealing" from you.  Ebay is absolutely transparent about the fees they charge.

"Ebay fools you into believing their charge is 12.9%"  Most categories are 13.25% now.

That's not necessarily true.  It depends on what is being sold.  There are time when things that don't cost a great deal are in demand in areas that simply can't get those items.  So a buyer may be willing to pay the shipping in order to get the item they need or want.

I use to sell a series of patterns that sold very well for me.  They were paper patterns created to be stored in a 3 ring binder.  They sold for a variety of prices, depending on the pattern.  Often times the price of the pattern cost less that shipping, but they sold like hotcakes.

So it depends on what is being sold.

I said selling them is stupid. Selling an item where shipping quadruples the price (I.e. the statement I responded to) also quadruples the effective FVF. On a $20 item with $60 shipping (again, in line with the post I responded to), the FVF is about $11, and that’s only if the buyer doesn’t have to pay sales tax, possibly including tax on the shipping cost.

Re: How Many times Do We See This

No but they will pay 20.oo for the item and 8 dollars shipping.    Shipping MUST be paid by the buyers.  If a seller can't figure out the fees before determining the price of an item then ebay is not for them.

I agree 100%.  I have owned a few businesses and yes there are lots of write offs but if you are not making money hand over fist they really don't matter in the long run.  2008 was the death knell for us.

I'm too lazy to look up Sold items -- but there is this:

And it is not alone.

Perhaps @sin-in-dex  can tell us why.
