How Long Does a Seller Have to Wait for Auction Winner to Pay?

I usually sell BIN but I have a recent auction where the winner has not paid.

How long do I have to wait until I can cancel the sale (or ebay does) and I have no further obligation?

Usually if someone wants an item they pay right away, as I remember from a few previous auctions I have had.

If winner does not pay what is the procedure that is followed, and when?

How Long Does a Seller Have to Wait for Auction Winner to Pay?

Buyers have four full calendar days or 96 hours to pay, depending on how you have your unpaid transaction cancellations set up--four full calendar days if you cancel unpaid transactions manually or 96 hours if you've set up the automatic cancellation process.

There are a number of ways a seller can reduce or avoid nonpaying customers. Perhaps you've already relied on a couple of them, but here's a list of approaches you can utilize:

  • List all items as fixed-price, immediate payment required. Do not list with the auction format.
  • Remove the "best offer" option from your listings or decline each offer manually--no matter how tempting it appears.
  • Make sure to use the new cancellation process for members who don't pay within four full days (cancel on day five). A strike for nonpayment will be recorded on their account. The cancellation process can be done manually or you can set it to cancel for you automatically.
  • Set your Buyer Requirements to block any member with two or more strikes in the last twelve months--the most restrictive setting.
  • Add the member id to your Blocked Buyer List.

Utilizing these tools will help eliminate unpaid transactions.

If the buyer doesn't pay within 4 full days (i.e., 96 hours) then you will see "Buyer didn't pay" as an option when canceling the transaction.  Here is the Help page about what to do if a buyer doesn't pay:

4 days is the minimum, but the automatic cancellation can be set up to various intervals (4, 7, 11...) up to 30 days.

Email them if 2 days have passed and let them know that payments are due 96 hours after an auction ends.  When the time comes and if no payment has been made, cancel the transaction with the excuse BUYER HAS NOT PAID.   Relist.   Make sure that you block this buyer.

The title of this thread is " How Long Does a Seller Have to Wait for Auction Winner to Pay?"  Wouldn't the appropriate answer be "four days?" It's obvious the OP is interested in the minimum amount of time s/he has to wait before s/he can cancel. Why would a  post regarding the maximum amount of time be helpful to the OP?

It's getting so every single reply has to include every minute detail of every potential scenario--even if it isn't relevant to the OP's situation--or be subject to criticism. I answered the OP's question and provided links to eBay's help pages, etc., so the OP could read up on the processes in more detail him/herself. Apparently, that wasn't enough.

Your post seemed to imply that 96 hours was the only option. I was just trying to clarify.

Your post also provided a lot of information that the OP didn't ask for, didn't it?

Perhaps you inferred. I certainly didn't imply. Nowhere did I say a transaction must be cancelled on day five. Again, as I said previously, the OP was clearly looking for the earliest time frame in which s/he could cancel.

Not enough, apparently--even though I provided a link that explains that little detail I didn't specify in my written post, since it was nowhere near germane to the OP's situation.

LOL. Yes and no.

There have been multiple threads posted about how manual versus automatic cancellations work.

If an unpaid transaction takes place at 11:30 p.m. on a Monday, it can be cancelled manually on Saturday at 12:01 a.m.--day five after four full calendar days.

If a seller has preferences set for eBay to cancel the transaction automatically, it will be cancelled at 11:30p.m. + one second  on Friday night--96 hours later.

Thank you all for the info.

Apparently I will be offered a Buyer Didn't Pay option after 4 days from auction ended and I will just need to click on that to lead to a cancellation. Right?

As I usually only sell BIN I don't have any procedure set up for this. I think 4 days gives the buyer plenty of time to pay if he is sincere.

96 hours. If buyer does not pay you relist.

Yes. If you have not set it up to cancel automatically, you'll see the option appear after four full calendar days--on day five. It will appear as soon as the time frame for payment has expired.

@coolections

It's 96 hour IF the OP has set their preferences for eBay to cancel unpaid transactions automatically; however. the OP stated upthread that s/he DID NOT have that preference selected. In the case, then, of canceling manually, the option will appear after four FULL calendar days; i.e., on day five.

Member wins an auction at noon on Monday but never pays.

  • Manual cancellation will appear on Saturday at 12:00 a.m. + one second (four full calendar days later).
  • Automatic cancellation will take place on Friday at noon (96 hours later).
